Job Summary:
This is a real first-engineer role,not a"join an existing team"role.You will own the codebase,set the engineering bar,and lead delivery of the next 12 months of roadmap.
Responsibilities:
Foundations(first 30–60 days)
- Audit and reset our deploy workflow and CI/CD pipeline
- Stand up a proper staging environment
- Document the stack and architectural decisions
- Establish end-to-end testing as a discipline
Integrations(months 2–6)
- Build additional data ingestion connectors beyond Xero(accounting platforms,identity providers,HR/payroll systems)
- Design and build vendor utilisation integrations
- Build a notifications system covering onboarding,alerts,and insight delivery
- Design and build the master vendor catalogue at scale
AI agents(months 3–9)
- Extend LLM-based vendor identification and classification work
- Build evaluation infrastructure for agent reliability
- Productionise the agent task model(per-task pricing)
Productisation(months 6–12)
- Build Tier 2 functionality:utilisation analytics,consolidation recommendations,renewal automation
- Integrate Stripe billing and tier paywalling
- Help shape the hiring of engineer#2
Requirements
Stack
- Next.js 14(App Router),TypeScript,React 18
- PostgreSQL via node-postgres,hosted on AWS RDS
- Auth0 for multi-tenant authentication
- AWS ECS Fargate(Sydney region),CloudWatch,SSM,OIDC-based IAM
- GitHub Actions for CI/CD
- Tailwind CSS,Radix UI(design system inspired by Stripe,Linear,Notion)
- Anthropic API(Claude)for LLM features
- SendGrid for transactional email
- Claude Code and Replit Agent for AI-assisted development
Must-have experience
- 1–5 years shipping production web applications
- Production Next.js with App Router(not just Pages Router)
- Strong PostgreSQL experience:migrations,indexing,transactions,raw SQL when needed
- Production AWS experience:ECS or equivalent,RDS,IAM,secrets management
- REST API design,OAuth,webhooks,idempotent operations
- Multi-tenant SaaS architecture and related tenancy issues
- Strong written English(async work with founders in a different timezone)
- Comfortable with AI-assisted dev tools(Claude Code,Cursor,or equivalent)
Strongly preferred
- Has shipped LLM-integrated features in production(prompt design,evals,cost management)
- Stripe billing integration experience(subscriptions,metered billing,paywalls)
- Early-stage startup experience(previously 2nd or 3rd engineer in a startup)
- Has owned production on-call

- Slack is the main communication tool
- Async-first,written-first;decisions are documented,not just outcomes
- Two long-lived working branches(one per founder),PR to main,auto-deploy to AWS ECS in~5 minutes
- Heavy use of AI dev tools;focus is on judgement,decomposition,and quality rather than typing speed
- Direct,analytical communication;pushback is expected both ways
- No standups,no Jira;work is driven by briefs and PRDs in markdown
