Application Engineer
AI Summary
Application Engineer develops, configures, tests and supports ERP-related software solutions (Datascape) for local government, focusing on reliable, maintainable product changes and collaboration across teams.
About this role
Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people’s lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.
About the Role
You’ll be joining Datacom’s Local Government Product Engineering team as an **Application Engineer , contributing to the development, configuration, testing, and support of solutions that underpin our ERP product, Datascape **.
This role will suit someone who enjoys building solid, reliable solutions and takes pride in doing good technical work. You’ll be part of a collaborative product engineering team, helping turn business requirements into practical solutions that are maintainable, fit for purpose, and built to last.
We’re particularly interested in people who are technically capable and also curious about how software engineering is evolving. That includes areas like AI-assisted development, automation, and agentic ways of working. You don’t need deep experience here, but you should have an interest in how these approaches can improve the way teams build and deliver products.
Experience with ERP platforms would be valuable, and so would any familiarity with the local government sector. More broadly, we’re looking for someone who cares about building quality products and wants to keep improving how they work.
We like to bring people together in person when we can, but we also recognise the benefits of working from home for work/life balance. We leave it to you and the team you join to decide what works best.
NOTE: Our opening is based in both Auckland and Tauranga.
What You’ll Do:
As an Application Engineer, you will be focused on:
- **Solution development and configuration **– design, build, configure, and maintain product changes that meet business and customer needs.
- **Quality and testing **– make sure changes are properly tested, reliable, and ready for release.
- **Deployment and release support **– support the movement of changes across environments in line with agreed practices and change controls.
- **Documentation and knowledge sharing **– keep technical documentation up to date and contribute to shared knowledge and team improvement.
- **Continuous improvement and emerging practices **– help improve engineering ways of working, including the use of automation, AI-assisted development, and agentic practices.
We are an agile company and are keen to respond to changing customer, technology, and internal stakeholder needs — which means our roles can evolve over time to meet those needs.
What You’ll Bring
Required experience and skills:
- 2+ years’ experience in software development, configuration engineering, or a closely related technical delivery role
- Solid technical capability in one or more relevant languages or technologies such as **JavaScript, JSON, XML, SQL **, or comparable development/configuration tooling

- Familiarity with relational databases and data structures
- Understanding of deployment processes, change controls, and working across multiple environments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with good attention to detail
- Ability to work collaboratively in large, cross-functional teams
- Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong time management skills and the ability to balance competing priorities
- A strong sense of ownership and pride in delivering quality product outcomes
- Interest in modern software engineering practices, including AI-assisted development, automation, and agentic ways of working
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
Nice to have
