Summary of the position:
The Community Worker will work as part of the Community Services Team that responds to our clients and their families by deliveringholistic person-centeredpractice, andworking in partnership with families, by valuing and respecting MJDF’s ‘our-way’ approach.
The Community Worker will provide support to our clients and their families, and provides cultural insight, guidance and mentoring to our staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- AssistsCommunity Services Specialists and Family Support Workers in their daily activities working with MJD clients and families;
- Assists with transport for MJD clients and families;
- Informs and guides staff about needs and what is happening with MJD clients and families;
- Interpret and translate at meetings and appointments, including education about MJD;
- Teach and mentor non-Indigenous staff/volunteers about relevant elements of Kinship,Culture and family structure (eg. Family tree);
- Engage families in the community about the work of the MJD Foundation,teach families ‘at risk’ about research done by the MJDF or relevant to MJD;
- Provides general all-round administrative and office support if required;
- Assist tomaintain the MJD vehicle log books/vehicle checks;
- Assists clients attending therapy sessions;
- Support with community trips/Kinconnect trips as appropriate;
Selection Criteria:
- Aboriginal Australian Community Member
- Respected individual in the community
- Understanding of MJD impacts in families
- The ability to teach and guide staff regarding cultural practices;
- The ability to be flexible;
- Good spoken English.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience working with people living with a disability or caring for the elderly
- Formal interpretation qualifications
- Formal community or health worker qualifications
