Design Engineer

ChicagoOn-siteFull-time

AI Summary

Design Engineer owns end-to-end product design and also contributes to the React + Material UI frontend, shaping core UI in a small, high-ownership team.

About this role

Renterra is a Series A–backed SaaS company building the operating system for the $100B+ equipment rental industry. Our product handles complex, data-heavy workflows across operations, logistics, and billing — the kind of UI problems that require real design thinking and real engineering skill.

We're hiring a Design Engineer: someone who owns product design end to end and also contributes meaningfully to our React + Material UI frontend. This isn't a "designer who can inspect code" role — you'll design in your tool of choice, prototype fast, and ship real UI in our codebase.

You'll work directly with the Product Manager and a small engineering team. The role is high-ownership and high-visibility.

What You'll Do

  • Own end-to-end product design for core areas of our B2B SaaS product — from problem framing through shipped UI

  • Design and prototype rapidly, using whatever tools get you to a good answer fastest (Figma, AI tools, code, napkin sketches — we don't care)

  • Build and evolve our Material UI–based design system, both in Figma and in code

  • Contribute directly to the React frontend — not just "small tweaks," but meaningful UI work: building components, refining layouts, polishing interactions

  • Prototype outside the design system when exploring new ideas, then codify what works

  • Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering to define scope, make tradeoffs, and ship

What We're Looking For

  • 2–5 years of experience designing and building B2B SaaS products

  • Strong portfolio that shows design ownership, speed, and iteration — bonus if it includes things you built, not just designed

  • Working proficiency in React and Material UI — you can pick up a ticket, open a PR, and ship frontend work

  • Strong product judgment and the ability to simplify complex workflows into clean, usable interfaces

  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, small-team environment where you'll wear multiple hats

  • Familiarity with modern design tooling, including AI-assisted workflows

Nice to Have

  • Experience building or maintaining a component-based design system

  • Experience designing for complex operational or logistics software

  • Background at a startup or high-growth SaaS company

Why Renterra

  • Competitive salary + meaningful equity at Series A

  • Health, dental, and vision

  • Flexible PTO

  • One of the most visible roles on the team — you'll shape what the product looks and feels like, and you'll build it yourself

  • A genuinely hard design problem: making dense, complex workflows feel simple

Renterra is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
