Position Summary
The conductor/engineer position will be to control and coordinate the train movements while switching railcars whether in the yard of a railroad, industrial plant, or similar location to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars in a safe and efficient manner to service our customers. This position is a manual labor position which requires that the individual become proficient in the following skills, duties, and requirements within a prescribed training and introductory period.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely operate locomotives and freight trains in compliance with FRA regulations, company policies, and shortline operating rules.
  • Perform a combination of conductor and engineer responsibilities, including train operation, switching, and ground work as needed.
  • Conduct switching operations, including coupling and uncoupling railcars, building and breaking down trains, and spotting cars at customer facilities.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for customers during pickups and deliveries, ensuring accurate placement and handling of railcars.
  • Perform pre-trip, en route, and post-trip inspections of locomotives, railcars, air brake systems, and safety equipment.
  • Interpret and comply with track warrants, bulletins, and dispatcher or track authority instructions.
  • Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, team members, and customers to coordinate safe and efficient operations.
  • Monitor train performance and track conditions, adjusting operations to maintain safety and efficiency.
  • Secure railcars and trains using proper hand brakes and securement procedures, particularly on industry tracks and sidings.
  • Accurately complete required documentation, including switch lists, train consists, inspection reports, and customer service records.
  • Assist with light locomotive maintenance and report any mechanical issues promptly.
  • Respond effectively to service interruptions, delays, or emergencies in accordance with company procedures.
  • Work in a variety of outdoor conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including walking on uneven terrain and lifting equipment.
  • Support a small-team environment by taking on additional duties as needed to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Participate in ongoing safety training and maintain required certifications.
  • Requirements and Experience

  • High school education or general education development (GED).
  • Must have or have had 49CFR242 and/or 49CFR240 qualifications
  • At least 1-year job-related experience; or equivalent of education and experience.
  • Ability to pass training and required testing.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Work Environment

  • The team member is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and elements, noise, and fumes from gas, oil, and grease.
