Internal Controls Advisor

Global Shared Services (GSS) is a critical asset for Anglo American enabling the delivery of functional service work for Finance & People Services to all Business Unit and Group Functions.

The GSS Internal Controls Advisor will be positioned to support Anglo American with meeting global and local compliance requirements.

KEY TASKS

Internal Controls

  • Work with stakeholders across Anglo, including leadership and control owners, to support the implementation and monitoring of financial reporting and operational control standards.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to control operators to support the delivery of an effective control environment.
  • Deliver training to Anglo colleagues on control standards, operation and evidence expectations.
  • Proactively identify the impact of business process changes on financial compliance and advise on effective mitigation of associated risks.

Control Testing, Quality Review and Assurance Support

  • Support the ongoing review of the effectiveness of the Anglo American internal control environment, including remediation activities.
  • Support the annual Anglo American control self-assessment exercise.
  • Review internal control testing and analysis to ensure quality, consistency and alignment with methodology.
  • Evaluate control testing outcomes and support alignment of findings and remedial actions with relevant stakeholders.
  • Support timely, complete and accurate delivery of control testing activities.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of internal control reviews, including the tracking of remedial actions.

Compliance Management and Monitoring

  • Develop business/function-specific Compliance Management Plans in support of Anglo American’s objective to conduct business with integrity.
  • Coordinate the delivery of business/function-specific Compliance Management Plans.
  • Act as a key point of contact for in-scope compliance-related matters.
  • Report compliance-related breaches or contraventions of policies and procedures.
  • Regularly report on the status of Compliance Management Plan implementation to relevant stakeholders.

Risk Management and Specialist Projects

  • Participate in ad hoc enhancement, risk, control and compliance projects across GSS.
  • Collaborate with the global IT function to support the management of risks relating to fraud and segregation of duties, where required within testing parameters.
  • Support broader risk management processes as required.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and senior stakeholders across GSS and the wider Anglo American business.
  • Support management within the GSS Risk & Controls team in engagements with internal and external audit teams.

People and Team/Leadership

  • Build partnerships and maintain strong relationships with all relevant middle management and their teams
  • Contribute to the broader business by working with others in such a way that it optimises the overall business results
  • Demonstrate behaviour in line with the Group’s values, standards and a professional workplace
  • Coach and develop team members through audit testing and ad-hoc projects

  • Perform work in line with Anglo American’s Sustainable development framework, ensuring business decisions and objectives are aligned.

Safety & Health

  • Demonstrate behaviour in line with safety, health and environmental (SHE) standards and with the Group’s values.  This includes leading and adhering to the SHE expectations for your team, ensuring your behaviour meets the required standards and participating in relevant safety audits.

Compliance

  •  Ensure compliance with the Anglo American Values in all work undertaken
  • Apply knowledge within the business to mitigate risk and identify new ways to assess adherence

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Auditing / Finance / Risk / Commerce / Accounting
  • Professional designation (CIA or CA) required

EXPERIENCE

  • 6–8 years’ experience in audit, risk, internal controls and compliance environments
  • Experience in risk management and compliance management is preferred
  • Prior experience in a Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) environment, either within a SOX registrant or as an audit/advisory professional supporting SOX registrants
  • Specialist knowledge of the interpretation and application of SOX, ICFR, UK Corporate Governance Code and JSE Listing Requirements
  • Understanding of the Institute of Internal Auditors Standards, COSO ERM and Internal Control Frameworks
  • Proven ability to confidently engage, challenge and influence senior management
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage priorities and deliver within agreed timelines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex information and provide practical recommendations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate risk, control and compliance matters to diverse stakeholders
