Mechanical Engineer - Robotic Power Tools

BengaluruOn-siteFull-time

AI Summary

Mechanical engineer who designs and prototypes tool interfaces and end-effectors for robotic power tools, transforming concepts into CAD models, drawings, and physical assemblies.

About this role

About Origin

Origin (previously 10xConstruction) is building general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction to tackle rising costs, safety risks, and labour shortages. Our modular, multi-trade platform combines purpose-built hardware with real-time site intelligence to navigate complex environments and execute tasks with precision. Trained in high-fidelity simulation and already deployed on live sites, our robots deliver 5x faster execution, 250%+ margin expansion, and significant cost savings. Join India’s most talent-dense robotics team consisting of individuals from IITs, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

About the role

As a Mechanical Engineer - Robotic Power Tools, you are the hands-on execution engine of the tooling team. You will spend your days turning abstract tooling concepts into detailed CAD, generating precision manufacturing drawings, and physically assembling these power tools in the workshop. You will bridge the gap between a standard, off-the-shelf construction tool and a fully integrated robotic end-effector.

Key Responsibilities

CAD Design & Drafting:

  • Design custom brackets, motor mounts, sensor shrouds, and protective housings in SolidWorks to adapt power tools to the robot arm.
  • Package actuators, bearings, and structural components into tight spatial constraints.
  • Create detailed, manufacturing-ready 2D drawings with appropriate GD&T for external machine shops and sheet metal vendors.

Prototyping & Fabrication:

  • Build physical prototypes of tool adapters and compliance mechanisms using 3D printers, laser cutters, and 80/20 extrusions.
  • Work hands-on in the lab modifying existing construction tools (e.g., cutting handles, milling flat reference surfaces, tapping new mounting holes).
  • Assemble and grease complex gearboxes, linear rails, and tool changer mechanisms.

Testing & Iteration:

  • Assist in life-cycle testing of tools, documenting wear patterns on belts, gears, and compliant materials.
  • Iterate rapidly on designs based on immediate feedback from field tests or workbench failures.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of professional experience in mechanical design and product development.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD Tools (Onshape or equivalent) and creating 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Solid understanding of basic statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of standard manufacturing processes (CNC milling, turning, sheet metal).
  • Exceptional hands-on skills: You should be completely comfortable using shop tools (drill presses, bandsaws, grinders) and hand tools.

Preferred Experiences

  • Experience designing mechanisms involving springs, pneumatics, or small motors.
  • Previous experience integrating hardware onto collaborative robot arms.
  • Design portfolio showcasing tooling or mechanism-heavy projects.
