The main purpose of this position is to ensure the effective utilization and logistical planning of Star Fleet team-driver capacity across assigned territories and priority corridors, working closely with the Network Fleet Manager, Network Fleet Supervisor, District Product Teams, and Service Providers. The Planner manages dedicated team-driver capacity as a reusable network asset — planned, protected, and monetized across multiple districts — and ensures no Star Fleet team is dispatched without a reload, return, or approved reposition plan.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Administer reload and round-trip planning for Star Fleet teams. This includes prioritizing loads based on customer requirements, commitments, team-driver production, trailer utilization, and full-cycle profitability.
  • Identify reload opportunities for capacity delivering within the next 24, 48, and 72 hours and build multi-leg plans (round-trip, return-load, reposition).
  • Apply the capacity decision hierarchy in support of the Supervisor — Star Fleet first, internal reload match second, ad hoc direct-asset procurement third, escalation fourth.
  • Match available or future Star Fleet capacity to district outbound demand; pair one district's inbound delivery capacity with another district's outbound freight.
  • Review the geographical area for inbound, outbound, committed, and empty truck status, as well as trailer pools, to maximize asset utilization.
  • Support the rolling 3-day capacity outlook with projected next-available times, destination markets, and target reload markets.
  • Support Service Providers' Fleet Manager requests for production, home time, and other related requests.
  • Maintain market playbooks for major Star Fleet and high-value locations; classify destination markets by reload strength, demand, and risk.
  • Manage the day-to-day utilization of drop loads at terminals that fall in assigned geographical territories.
  • Allocate trailers to designated customers and geographic areas.
  • Monitor and ensure on-time pickups and deliveries; notify the Supervisor, Manager, and Districts of potential situations, delays, or other issues.
  • Support freight payment invoice audits and payment support.
  • Schedule may vary based on shifts needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of Expeditors International policies and procedures, usually gained through practical experience and on-the-job training.
  • Knowledge of D.O.T. regulations with regards to the trucking industry.
  • Excellent decision-making skills in logistical and reload planning.
  • Strong understanding of reload economics, deadhead exposure, dwell risk, hub-and-relay staging, and driver/carrier preferences.
  • Ability to evaluate freight opportunities on full-cycle profitability — revenue, cost, dwell, deadhead exposure, and reload likelihood — rather than one-way margin.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously in a time-sensitive control tower environment.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong typing skills of at least 35–40 wpm.
  • Knowledge of U.S. geography; familiarity with U.S., Canada, and Mexico truckload markets preferred.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel or other data-analysis tools.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing, Management, or Transportation/Logistics, or equivalent experience.
  • Two to three years customer service experience preferred.
  • Two to three years transportation experience preferred.
  • Experience in direct-asset truckload, dedicated fleet planning, team-driver execution, expedited freight, or high-value truckload preferred.
