Inside Higher Ed
provides the latest news, analysis and solutions for the entire higher education community. Inside Higher Ed is owned by Times Higher Education (THE), the world’s most authoritative source of data, analysis and information on higher education, with five decades’ experience dedicated to the field.

Our mission is to provide forward-looking insights and services to the entire higher education community, empowering individuals and organizations to excel and transform learners’ lives.

About the role

Inside Higher Ed is seeking a temporary full-time reporter to cover non-traditional students and institutions during a staff member’s nearly four-month leave. The beat includes religious institutions, minority-serving institutions (HBCUs, HSIs, etc.), and community colleges, with a focus on low-income students, first-generation students, undocumented students, adult learners and student parents. The reporter will also cover workforce development, microcredentials and career-focused educational programs such as apprenticeships and internships.

Duties include:

• Reporting and writing 2-3 500-1200-word stories per week, either assigned or conceived by you

• Writing 2-3 Quick Takes weekly, short, 250-300-word items aggregated from other news sites.

• Attending twice-weekly editorial meetings

We’re looking for someone with:

• A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in education or public policy reporting.

• Demonstrated ability to report on racial and socioeconomic inequities with rigor, nuance, and sensitivity.

• Strong news judgment and the ability to generate original story ideas.

• Comfort working in a fast-paced digital newsroom with daily deadlines

• Familiarity with higher education data sources (IPEDS, NCES, institutional research) is a plus

The details

This is a full-time, temporary position anticipated to run from August 3-November 25. The reporter will work closely with IHE's senior editorial staff and contribute across the publication's coverage areas as needed. The position is hybrid; preference given to candidates able to work in person three days a week in our Washington, D.C. office, located in the Dupont Circle area.

To apply

Please submit a résumé, cover letter, and three to five clips that demonstrate your ability to cover equity, access, or education policy. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
