Trainee Distribution Engineer

To train to carry out all distribution operational engineering activities across various work streams including but not limited to fault restoration and repair, maintenance, and asset replacement projects.

Work is carried out in a variety of environments, in office, or on site, and on the public roadways in all weathers. Reasonable fitness is required for on-site work and the carrying of heavy test equipment. This role once training has been completed acts as a key interface between Distribution and Asset Management, ensuring day to day delivery of project work and work programmes.

Key Responsibilities

1. Train to be able to carry out fault finding, investigation, repairs and modifications to the conveyance and supply systems to ensure reliability of all equipment.

2. Train towards being able to arrange and carry out distribution maintenance activities.

3. Train to be able to delivers asset replacement projects on the distribution network

4. Train to be able to undertake system related projects, including managing project work on the power station site and on the distribution system, to improve reliability and efficiency of supply and in accordance with the appropriate industry standards.

5. Train to be able to carry out High voltage switching and make safe apparatus for the issue and cancelling of safety documents.

6. Check details on site of new and existing substations and input data into the plant database for the purpose of maintaining accurate records of plant assets.

7. Communicate with developers, contractors, local authorities, and legal professionals for the purpose of projects, outages and road works.

8. Has a high level of Health & Safety responsibility and works within the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures, also supervises and coaches on-site staff in Health and Safety matters.

9. Training to be provided to enable participation in a compulsory formal standby rota.



Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Work towards completing a HNC/HND in electrical and electronics or similar. All training will be provided.
  • Experience in electrical systems and/or an electrical qualification would be preferred but not essential for this role as all training will be provided.
  • Must be self-motivated to agree and deliver against defined output targets
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • The post holder has a duty to keep up to date with industry practice and new technologies
  • Ability to communicate and manage people effectively; continually improving the performance of direct and indirect reports by providing feedback, mentoring and coaching
