Our Patient Services Department is responsible for the collection of blood samples and handling contained specimens, i.e., human blood, faeces, urine, tissue etc. from patients within the community and the hospital. These samples are then processed and tested in our medical laboratory.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee or Qualified Phlebotomist to join the Patient Services team at our Hawke’s Bay Laboratory in a permanent, full-time position (80 hours per fortnight).

In this role, you’ll be working closely with a supportive team to provide high-quality care and a positive experience for our patients every day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Blood collection: Responsible for handling contained specimens (e.g., human blood, feces, and tissue) and preparing them for transportation.
  • Customer service: Provide professional support and serve as a link between health professionals, patients, and the laboratory.

To be successful in this role you need to have:

  • A positive and friendly approach to your work and demonstrate cultural and social sensitivity.
  • Compassion for others, including a real desire to provide high-quality care to a wide variety of patients of all ages and circumstances.
  • Excellent customer service skills including a high level of personal presentation.
  • Good computer skills with a strong attention to detail and an ability to follow processes accurately, even when under pressure.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.


If you are not already registered with the Medical Science Council of New Zealand, we will support you working towards becoming a Qualified Phlebotomist.
