What this means
Fresh backend engineer listings jumped 22.7% this week, so start your search there for the highest odds of early interview slots. Senior roles dominate the market at 52.3%, so early-career candidates should filter for entry-level and inspect mid-level requirements closely. If you have experience, target senior and staff searches for broader fit.
Backend engineer job postings this week are up 22.7%, adding 89 new listings. That is a current snapshot of the 4,949 active backend roles in our index, not a forecast for the whole economy. For you, the practical change is immediate: more fresh roles are available to review before this week’s applicants fill the first interview slots.
New backend postings are rising while older listings still dominate
The 481 backend roles posted in the last seven days compare with 392 in the week before. That is a meaningful increase in fresh supply, even though the active market is still weighted toward older requisitions. We counted 3,205 active roles posted more than 60 days ago, or 64.8% of the market.
Older postings may include roles that are stale, difficult to fill, or still genuinely open. Treat the newest listings as your first search pass, then use the older pool for roles with unusually strong fit. Our reading is that employers are adding hiring activity while some existing requisitions move slowly.
Senior roles dominate the market, so early-career applicants need a narrower search
Senior roles account for 2,588 active backend listings, or 52.3% of the market. Mid-level roles add 1,418 (28.7%), staff roles account for 517 (10.4%), and entry-level roles number 279 (5.6%). Another 147 listings (3.0%) do not state seniority.
If you are early in your career, filter aggressively for entry-level roles and examine the requirements on adjacent mid-level postings. If you already have substantial experience, senior and staff searches should give you more room to target teams, technologies, and working arrangements rather than applying indiscriminately.
Remote work leads stated workplace types, while flexibility expands the pool
Among the 2,850 roles whose employers state a workplace type, 1,290 are remote (45.3%), 816 are hybrid (28.6%), and 744 are on-site (26.1%). Remote is the largest single category, while the two office-connected categories together make up more than half of stated arrangements.
A remote-only search gives you a defined starting pool. If you can accept hybrid or on-site work, widen your filters and compare the added roles against commute, relocation, and time-zone costs before applying.
Salary data is limited, but published senior US ranges give you a negotiation reference
Only 900 backend listings include a salary range, equal to 18.2% of active roles. Among 481 US listings with a stated annual USD range, the median minimum is $163,000 and the median maximum is $230,000. For senior-level US roles, the median range midpoint is $196,750, based on 272 listings.
These figures describe advertised ranges rather than accepted offers. Use them to set questions for a recruiter: ask where the role sits within its posted band, and ask whether location or level changes the range.
AWS leads the skills list, giving applicants a clear screening priority
AWS appears in 42.0% of backend listings. Kubernetes appears in 35.9%, Python in 35.7%, and PostgreSQL in 35.1%. Docker, Java, CI/CD, SQL, REST API, TypeScript, Go, and Node.js also appear among the most requested skills.
Put the skills you genuinely use near the top of your résumé, and attach a concrete project or result to each one. If your background is strongest in Python or PostgreSQL, for example, make that evidence easy to find before a recruiter reaches the skills section.
A small group of employers has repeated demand: Coupang lists 59 open backend titles, Bjak 49, and Affirm and Gitlab 36 each. Those companies can give you several relevant applications without requiring a completely new search every time. Read each description separately before reusing materials.
The United States has the largest country pool, with several international alternatives
The United States accounts for 1,371 listings (27.7% of active roles). India has 366 (7.4%), Germany 332 (6.7%), the United Kingdom 274 (5.5%), Canada 198 (4.0%), and France 177 (3.6%).
Country counts use the location stated in each listing. If you can work across borders or time zones, compare these markets by employer requirements and eligibility before spending time on an application.

What this data cannot show
- We match on job title only. A role with an unusual title, such as “Platform Engineer,” is not counted, so these totals are a floor.
- Seniority and workplace labels come from employers. Many listings do not state a workplace type, so the remote, hybrid, and on-site shares apply only to roles with that field completed.
- Salary medians use published US annual ranges and range midpoints for senior roles. They describe what employers advertise, not what people are paid.
- Week-over-week results compare two seven-day windows. A single comparison can be noisy; next week’s result will show whether this increase continues.
Methodology
We counted 4,949 active backend engineer listings in the Jobless index and flagged the 481 posted in the last 7 days. Listings are matched on job title only; roles with unconventional titles are not included, so all counts are a floor. Seniority and workplace type are employer-stated labels with many listings missing a workplace field, so the remote, hybrid, and on-site shares apply only to the 2,850 roles with a stated arrangement. Salary medians (with a median minimum of $163,000 and median maximum of $230,000) use 481 US listings that include an annual USD range; the senior median midpoint of $196,750 comes from 272 senior-level US roles. These figures describe advertised ranges, not offers. Week-over-week change compares the latest 7-day window to the 7 days before. Skills are extracted from job descriptions via a model and may not reflect every qualification listed. Country counts use the location stated in each listing. Figures were computed by SQL against the Jobless index on 13 September 2026. The draft was produced with a language model from that fact set and reviewed by the Jobless team before publishing.
