About the role — FoodShare is hiring an Accountant to lead accounts receivable, prepare month-end reconciliations and continuity schedules, support accounts payable, and contribute to the day-to-day operations of a growing finance team. This is a hands-on accounting role for someone who enjoys transactional and reconciliation work, takes pride in clean documentation, and wants to grow with a finance function that is shifting from operational to strategic. The right person is versatile, comfortable wearing several hats, and confident enough to raise a concern when something does not look right.
Main Tasks
The Accountant is a key contributor to FoodShare's finance function. The role leads accounts receivable and cash receipts, prepares month-end reconciliations and continuity schedules, supports accounts payable, and contributes to the audit process. Core balance sheet schedules are prepared and maintained by the Accountant and reviewed by the Finance Manager as part of the month-end close. The Accountant works closely with the Finance Manager and the Finance Facilitator to keep daily operations running smoothly, and is cross-trained to support other functions so the team can maintain continuity when a colleague is away.
Duties include (but are not limited to)
Accounts receivable and cash receipts
- Process incoming deposits and cash receipts, and record accounts receivable entries accurately and on time
- Prepare deposit summaries and supporting records, including when cheques are printed or received on site, and apply receipts to the correct programs and funding sources
- Coordinate with program managers and the development team on receivables to be recorded and followed up
Month-end reconciliations and schedules
- Prepare the bank reconciliation, including GL review, bank charges, journal entries, and follow-up on stale-dated or unusual items, for review by the Finance Manager
- Prepare and maintain the continuity schedules for investments, capital assets, and deferred capital contributions (DCC), including recognition entries and reconciliation to the GL
- Prepare and maintain the grant schedules, deferred grants and grants receivable, reconciling restricted balances to expenditures and coordinating accruals with the program and development teams
- Support the Finance Manager on the reconciliation of deferred revenue and of donor and fundraising revenue to the general ledger, in collaboration with Fund Development
Accounts payable support
- Support accounts payable processing alongside the Bookkeeper, and provide backup coverage to keep payables moving when needed
Day-to-day accounting entries
- Prepare journal entries to support month-end close, including bank charges, amortization, fair market value adjustments, DCC recognition, accruals, and deferred revenue
- Process donation revenue entries and personal expense reimbursements in accordance with policy
Audit support
- Support the annual audit by preparing working papers, continuity schedules, and supporting documentation for prepared schedules, and respond to auditor queries on those areas
Documentation, tools, and systems
- Maintain and refine the preparer and reviewer checklist and electronic working paper documentation for prepared schedules
- Develop and maintain financial templates, schedules, and analytical tools in Excel and Google Sheets
- Contribute to the ongoing rollout and use of finance technology, including Sage Intacct, Rippling, and spend management or AP automation tools
Salary: $56,000 / year
Benefits: Extended health and dental benefits (Class A) at start. RRSP or TFSA contributions after successful completion of probation period.
Contract Type: Full-time, Indefinite, 37.5 hours per week
Location: Hybrid - occasional on-site presence at the FoodShare office to support the Finance function, as discussed with the supervisor
Reports to: Director of Finance (with future reporting line through the Finance Manager once that role is established)
Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- A completed accounting diploma or degree
- 2+ years of accounting experience, including accounts receivable, month-end close, journal entry preparation, and balance sheet reconciliation
- Experience processing deposits and cash receipts, and supporting accounts payable
- Experience preparing continuity schedules and supporting documentation for an external audit
- Demonstrated experience with Sage Intacct or comparable accounting software
- Advanced knowledge of Excel and Google Sheets, including formulas, pivot tables, and template design
- Familiarity with Canadian nonprofit accounting (ASNPO) and fund and restricted grant accounting concepts
- Confidence to raise concerns and flag errors clearly, even when the direction has come from someone more senior
- Excellent time management, with the ability to remain calm under pressure and meet close deadlines
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong documentation skills
- A high level of integrity for handling sensitive and confidential information
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a small, cross-supporting team.
Considered an asset:
- Experience with Rippling, spend management platforms, or AP automation tools
- Familiarity with GST/HST returns and PSB rebate filings
- Experience in a nonprofit, charity, or social enterprise context

At FoodShare we believe that taking an honest, transparent approach to our compensation structure improves morale and is key to building the trust that is foundational in advancing equity.
We have a transparent 1:3 ratio between the lowest paid and highest paid FoodShare employee. This means that the highest paid person at FoodShare can earn no more than three times what the lowest paid person earns for their labour.
