Charles Schwab is seeking a Sr Specialist - Software Development & Engineering (API Gateway) to join our Enterprise Middleware team within Portfolio Management Technology. Enterprise Middleware delivers the foundational API gateway and integration platforms that power thousands of business-critical applications and support Schwab’s cloud modernization, resiliency, security, and AI transformation initiatives.
In this role, you will develop, operate, and automate Schwab’s enterprise API gateway platform powered by Google Apigee, helping drive secure, scalable, and reliable API-first solutions across the firm. You will collaborate with application, security, infrastructure, and platform teams to improve developer experience, accelerate cloud-native adoption, strengthen platform resiliency, and enable critical business outcomes. Success in this role requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, technical leadership, and a passion for leveraging automation and AI-assisted engineering practices to improve productivity, operational excellence, and the delivery of innovative business solutions.
What you have
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 4+ years of software engineering experience in backend development, middleware, or API integration platforms.
- Experience building and operating API gateway or integration platforms (Google Apigee preferred, or equivalent such as MuleSoft, Kong, or AWS API Gateway).
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve software delivery, engineering productivity, and code quality.
- Understanding of AI-Driven Development Lifecycle (AI-DLC) practices and intelligent automation concepts.
- Strong proficiency with Java, .NET, or Python for backend services and microservices development.
- Experience with Angular, JavaScript, REST APIs, and developer portal technologies.
- Experience implementing API security controls including OAuth 2.0, mTLS, certificate-based authentication, rate limiting, and threat protection.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation using tools such as Maven, GitHub Actions, or equivalent technologies.
- Understanding of TLS/SSL, certificate management, DNS, load balancing, and network security fundamentals.
- Experience implementing observability, monitoring, alerting, and production support practices.
- Experience applying Test-Driven Development (TDD), including unit, integration, and contract testing.
- Demonstrated communication, collaboration, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills within Agile environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Google Apigee, including proxy development, shared flows, target servers, KVMs, and policy configuration.
- Experience contributing to AI-DLC practices and leveraging AI-enabled automation across software development and platform operations.
- Familiarity with agentic AI workflows or multi-agent orchestration patterns.
- Experience supporting API management platforms within financial services or other highly regulated environments.
- Experience with enterprise-scale traffic migration, certificate lifecycle management, and API onboarding automation.
- Exposure to Akamai or other CDN and edge platform technologies.
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including GKE, Cloud Armor, and networking services.
- Experience contributing to architecture standards, reference patterns, or developer enablement initiatives.
- Google Apigee, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or related API/cloud platform certifications.
