About this role

National Banking Corporation Limited (NBCL) is seeking an experienced Chief Risk and Compliance Officer (CRCO) with good governance to design, implement and maintain the Bank's risk frameworks and related policies consistent with other banks and financial institutions. The CRCO will the join the Executive Team, reporting directly to the CEO of the Bank.


Position Goal


  • Design, implementation and maintenance of divisional and group risk frameworks and related policies.
  • Active involvement in the determination and articulation of divisional and group risk appetite for approval by the Board. This includes the methodology for setting tolerances and boundaries for consideration by the Board. Implement appropriate processes for communication of the approved risk appetite throughout the organization.
  • Implement an appropriate infrastructure of policies, processes, systems, and reports for managing and monitoring risk within each division and within the Group.
  • Design and implement relevant (management) committee governance structures across each division and the wider Group.
  • Integrate risk management with strategy and business planning.
  • Design and implement appropriate risk reporting for senior management, the Board, and its relevant sub-committees.
  • Embed the 3 Lines of defence model of risk management across the organisation.
  • Provide specialist guidance on organisational and divisional level risks, including compliance, across all of the risk dimensions.
  • Drive and influence the development of a strong and robust risk culture across each division and the overall Group.
  • As part of the executive management group, the role will also be actively engaged in business planning, and implementation of approved strategies, play an active role in the leadership of the organisation, as well as development and maturity of people capability within the organisation. There will be regular interaction with a range of external stakeholders, including regulators, investors and analysts, and strong influencing and communication skills are


Key Result Areas



  • Ensuring that decisions made within each division and the overall business are in alignment with the approved risk appetite and tolerances of the division/group.
  • Banking Division – ensure appropriate decision are made to specific loan requests within sole and joint Delegated Lending Authority, including referral to Risk Committee or the Board where required.
  • Participate as a voting member of relevant management governance committees as identified within the risk frameworks.
  • Ensuring that decisions made within each division and the overall business are in alignment with the approved risk appetite and tolerances of the division/group.
  • Banking Division – ensure appropriate decision are made to specific loan requests within sole and joint Delegated Lending Authority, including referral to Risk Committee or the Board where required.
  • Participate as a voting member of relevant management governance committees as identified within the risk frameworks.
  • Identify best practice risk processes and frameworks and develop a pathway for the organisation to progressively enhance capability to reach a high standard of maturity over an appropriate time frame.
  • Develop fit for purpose reporting and oversight mechanisms that are fit for the scale of the organisation.
  • Ensure data used in any risk modeling and/or trend analysis is of appropriate quality and suitable prior to its use.
  • Identify weaknesses in current risk and governance systems and processes and work with the business to improve or overcome issues in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain a requisite level of knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards across each relevant regulatory regime.

Qualifications & Experience



  • Tertiary qualification in a finance or risk related discipline is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of how value is created for clients. Knowledge of the regulatory environment.
  • Significant technical knowledge and expertise in at least one of credit, market, or operational risk within a comparable organisation.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and practices.
  • At least 15 years of experience in the financial services industry or other relevant industry.
  • Previous experience with the C-suiter.
  • Experience reporting to and interacting with boards.
  • Experience in risk management roles or relevant industry experience.
