About the Role
We’koqma’q First Nation is seeking a dedicated and skilled Cook to join our Children and Families Services team. The Cook plays an important role in supporting community wellness by preparing nutritious, safe meals for children, families, and community members.
This position helps promote healthy living by ensuring high-quality food preparation, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment, and supporting community programs and food-related initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Meal Planning and Preparation
- Plan and prepare daily meals and snacks in line with Canada’s Food Guide and dietary needs
- Ensure meals are prepared on time and served in appropriate portions
- Develop weekly menus and adjust based on feedback and seasonal availability
- Consult with a dietician or health professional as required
Food Safety and Kitchen Operations
- Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen environment at all times
- Wash and sanitize dishes, utensils, and food preparation areas
- Ensure proper food storage, labelling, and temperature control
- Complete daily food safety and meal logs
- Follow all food safety and hygiene standards
Inventory and Supply Management
- Monitor food inventory and report supply needs to the Director
- Rotate stock and check for expired items
- Maintain kitchen equipment and report any issues
Community and Program Support
- Prepare meals for community programs, including family meals and snacks for children and youth
- Prepare and package meals for distribution (e.g., food bank or family support programs)
- Support food service needs for community events and programming
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all health and safety regulations
- Maintain accurate records of cleaning schedules and inspections
- Ensure kitchen areas are safe and hazard-free
Qualifications
- Culinary diploma or equivalent training preferred
- Experience in food preparation (childcare, institutional, or community setting an asset)
- Food Handler Certification required
- Valid Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check required
Skills and Attributes
- Strong knowledge of nutrition and dietary needs, particularly for children and families
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Attention to detail, especially in food safety and hygiene
- Ability to work in a team-oriented, community-focused environment
- Knowledge of Mi’kmaw language and culture is an asset
Working Conditions
- Kitchen-based environment within community facilities
- Moderate physical activity, including standing, lifting, and repetitive tasks
- High attention to detail required for food safety and quality
- Time-sensitive work with multiple dietary requirements
- Occasional flexibility required for community events
- May involve travel within Cape Breton for supplies
