Design Engineer II

OVERVIEW:

The Design Engineer II supports product design, engineering analysis, and manufacturing activities for GIW pump products and related systems. This role assists with design validation, technical documentation, component selection, and engineering support activities while collaborating with Project Managers, Application Engineers, Drafting, Manufacturing, and Technical Service teams.

The position is responsible for helping develop practical engineering solutions that support customer requirements, manufacturing efficiency, and product performance while ensuring compliance with engineering standards and company procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Utilize customized computer-aided design (CAD) tools and engineering systems to support product development and design activities.
• Review customer orders and technical specifications to ensure design requirements and project details are clearly defined.
• Provide technical support to Application Engineers regarding outside equipment specifications and customer requirements.
• Assist in creating and maintaining technical documentation for purchased equipment and vendor-supplied components.
• Perform design checks and support Project Managers with component selection and general assembly design activities.
• Design sub-bases, guards, sole plates, and related support structures for pump installations.
• Support coordination of work activities for CAD Operators and drafting resources.
• Clarify technical details and provide engineering support to drafter/modelers as required.
• Create formula-driven spreadsheets and engineering calculation tools for design team use.
• Perform stress and structural analysis using commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software under engineering guidance.
• Design special tooling and coordinate with Purchasing and vendors to ensure compliance with GIW standards and specifications.
• Work with manufacturing personnel and outside vendors to resolve technical questions related to drawings, fabrication, and assembly.
• Support field sales teams by evaluating customer options and developing design layouts.
• Create standard General Arrangement drawings to support order processing efficiency and customer responsiveness.
• Participate in cross-functional engineering teams supporting competitor equipment replacement and customer solution development.
• Assist Project Managers, Application Engineers, and Purchasing with technical discussions involving customers and vendors.
• Update work instructions, procedures, and engineering documentation as processes evolve.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, manufacturing efficiency, and product quality.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related engineering discipline required.

Experience:

• Minimum 3–5 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
• Experience with pump systems, rotating equipment, or heavy industrial equipment preferred.
• Experience with CAD software, engineering analysis, and technical documentation required.

SKILLS / COMPETENCIES

• Proficiency with CAD software including NX / UGNX.
• Experience with Teamcenter or related product lifecycle management systems.
• Knowledge of GD&T, ISO tolerances, and technical drawing interpretation.
• Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and CAE simulation tools.
• Understanding of pump design principles and rotating equipment applications.
• Programming knowledge including C, C#, or C++ preferred.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.
• Strong teamwork and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequently:

• Sitting, computer work, reviewing technical documentation, and attending meetings.
• Working in office and engineering environments.

Occasionally:

• Walking through manufacturing and testing facilities.
• Standing, bending, and inspecting equipment in industrial environments.
• Wearing required PPE in designated production areas.
• Limited travel to customer or vendor locations as needed.
