Diesel Mechanic 3D

Position Overview:

Level 3D technicians are capable of diagnosing and repairing every component of commercial vehicles. These are the fighter pilots of the commercial vehicle repair world- Level 3 techs can multitask, diagnose, and repair vehicles all while communicating with other personnel and utilizing every piece of technology and resources available to come to a conclusion, regardless of the difficulty.

Essential Job Functions: The responsibilities listed are fundamental to the position and must be performed successfully to achieve the key performance objectives of the role. Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Level 3D tech should be competent in all Level 1 and Level 2 components as outlined below:

Level 1

• Preventative Maintenance (PMs): Assist with routine maintenance tasks to ensure equipment operates at peak performance
• Wheel End Maintenance: Learn and perform inspections, repairs, and replacements related to wheel-end assemblies
• Brake Systems: Gain experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining brake systems.
• Basic Electrical: Develop skills in troubleshooting and repairing basic electrical components and wiring.
• Tire Service: Assist in tire mounting, balancing, and general maintenance.
• Driveline Maintenance: Work on driveline components under supervision, ensuring proper alignment and functionality
• Suspension Systems: Learn to inspect, repair, and maintain suspension systems.
• Basic Fabrication: Acquire fundamental fabrication skills to assist in custom repairs and modifications.
• Air Systems: Gain practical knowledge in maintaining and troubleshooting air systems essential for diesel equipment.

Level 2

• Bolt on engine components- Defined as anything outside the valve cover or oil pan. Examples include: Manifolds, turbos, water pumps, fan drives, air compressors, etc.
• Federal Inspections- Meets all the requirements to legally perform federal inspections (DOT inspections) on commercial vehicles.
• HVAC- is able to perform repairs on HVAC systems, including air conditioning theory and proper recovery machine use.
• Air Systems- advanced: Is able to perform troubleshooting and repair of more complex air systems such as air compressors, air dryers, and brake valves.
• Alignments- is able to perform alignments in a satisfactory manner using TSC alignment equipment.
• Steering- is able to diagnose steering issues and perform repairs. Includes knowledge on testing pressures and flows of steering gears and pumps.
• Basic Electrical 2: Is able to troubleshoot electrical systems that involve start and charge issues. Alternators, batteries, starters, etc.
• CDL- Obtains and holds a CDL

Level 3D

• ABS- Extensive knowledge of ABS systems. Comfortable with Bendix and Wabco software.
• Engine- Extensive knowledge of electronic engine controls. Ability to diagnose and repair all parts of the engine, regardless of manufacturer. Very familiar with all types of engine OEM software for Volvo, Mack, Paacar, Cummins, Cat, Freightliner, Hino, etc
• Aftertreatment- understands deeply how aftertreatment systems work, including their integration with the engine and how the two affect each other. Utilizes all types of software to diagnose, monitor and repair aftertreatment systems on all types of vehicles.
• Cab Controllers- is able to diagnose and repair all types of control modules related to the chassis. Includes all the different acronyms of the different computers (LCM, ACM, VECU, IPPC, MCM, ACM, CPC, TCM, SAM, etc).
• Transmission- Is able to diagnose and repair automated transmissions such as Volvo Ishift, Paacar TX, Freightliner DT, Eaton Endurant, etc.
• Other- basically any other system that comes into our facilities for repairs. This could be electronically controlled hydrovac systems, collision warning, rollover protection, telematics, etc.

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license
• Strong work ethic, initiative, and
• At least 2 years working on heavy duty trucks. Solid experience in all types of electronics and manufacturers.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.

Work Environment:

• Work in a dynamic shop environment that may include exposure to noise, heat, and mechanical tasks.
