HIRING TIMELINE: Applications accepted through July 1st. Interviews will be scheduled for the first week or two of July, depending on the size of the candidate pool.
OBJECTIVE: Assistant Teachers are lead teachers in training, and have high expectations for involvement in all aspects of their assigned classroom(s) at a deep level. Their primary role is to support the operations of the classroom, the lead teacher, to assist with students' learning and social-emotional needs. Assistant Teachers will also participate in the development and delivery of curriculum, lessons and assessments across subjects under the direction of the lead teacher(s).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Lead Teacher:
- Assist or lead the development and/or implementation of specific curriculum, instruction and assessment to whole class, small groups and individual students.
- Help plan and implement, and participate in field trips and other special activities.
- Maintain the classroom environment (including but not limited to organizing materials, designing bulletin boards, setting up learning centers & work areas, and photocopying, cutting, and filing materials).
- Contribute to formative and/or summative assessment data and information to student report cards, parent/teacher conferences, and other home/school communications.
- Support the development of a healthy classroom social/emotional environment through effective classroom management and conflict resolution techniques.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with families, and communicate to families via blog, email, and other channels about student progress and/or concerns.
- Attend STST meetings when invited
- Attend Specialist classes to support specific student behaviors when appropriate
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Regularly check in with the Lead Teacher and maintain excellent communication.
- Attend BTSN
- Attend parent/teacher conferences when invited (2-4 per classroom supported)
- Work in Shark Squad during conferences and in-service days (2-4 hours per day)
- Perform morning, lunch, recess, and curb duties as assigned by the administration.
- Sub for the Lead Teacher as assigned (and write sub plans for the Assistant Teacher role).
- Participate in Open Houses, and any other Admissions events as assigned
- Attend relevant division meetings, faculty meetings, committee meetings, in-service trainings, and other mandatory professional development (exact assignments to be made depending on FTE).
- Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students and families.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Required
- Bachelor's Degree
- Successful classroom teaching experience at relevant grade levels or 3-5 years experience as a Teacher’s Aide in relevant grade levels or subject areas
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and proactively with all members of the community
Including students, faculty, staff, and parents
Preferred
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Current teaching credential
- Knowledge and understanding of, or direct experience with independent schools
