The Equine Veterinarian is responsible for ensuring the health, wellbeing, and performance of horses through medical care, preventive health programs, and emergency treatment. This role involves diagnosing, treating, and managing equine diseases, injuries, and conditions, while also providing expert advice on nutrition, exercise, and general care.

  • Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine health examinations and assessments of horses.
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, lameness, and other equine health issues.
  • Perform emergency medical and surgical procedures when required.
  • Administer vaccinations, deworming, dental care, and other preventive treatments.
  • Provide reproductive and foaling assistance, including monitoring pregnancies.
  • Advise on proper nutrition, fitness programs, and overall welfare management.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and health reports for all horses.
  • Oversee quarantine and biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Collaborate with trainers, handlers, farriers, and management on horse care.
  • Train and guide stable staff on first-aid and basic health practices.
  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations and veterinary standards.

Qualifications

  • Qualifications & Experience

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, with valid veterinary license.
  • Specialized training in Equine Medicine is preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in equine veterinary practice (clinical or field).
  • Proficiency in equine diagnostics, imaging, and surgical procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of equine anatomy, physiology, and common diseases.
  • Experience in managing performance horses (racing, show, or working horses) is an advantage.
