About this role
MOTAT is seeking a versatile technician to help build, install, and maintain our visitor-facing exhibitions.
No two days are the same as an Exhibition Technician. You’ll use a wide range of hands-on skills to fabricate, prototype, install, deinstall, and care for temporary and long‑term exhibitions across our sites. From building display furniture and mounts to troubleshooting interactives and AV elements, you’ll help keep our galleries looking their best and operating smoothly. You’ll work closely with a dedicated team, collaborating with designers, contractors, and volunteers, while managing your time well and pitching in when the work is hands-on and physical.
To be considered for this role, you will have:
- Experience with a range of building/fabrication materials, tools, and techniques.
- As we currently have a gap in our metal work and mount making capability, skills in this area would be favourable, but not essential.
- The ability to diagnose basic mechanical and technical issues and develop practical solutions.
- Proven communication skills and the ability to interpret instructions accurately.
- Confidence working safely and independently in a busy workshop environment.
- A full driver’s licence; a forklift licence is desirable.
- Basic CAD skills and experience handling museum or other precious objects are an advantage.
- An awareness of working within a visitor-facing organisation and to deadlines.
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, worked Monday – Friday. From time to time, the work can be labour‑intensive and involve heavy lifting, and occasional flexible hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays) may be required to meet installation schedules.
