Field Data Collection Specialist

HumanSignal is looking for Field Data Collection Specialists in the Columbus area to support a short-term, outdoor data collection project. You’ll travel to assigned locations, navigate a variety of outdoor environments, and use specialized equipment to collect high-quality field data.

This is an active, hands-on role that could be a great fit for hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, land surveyors, or anyone who enjoys spending significant time outdoors, navigating different locations, and working with technology.

What you’ll do

• Travel to assigned data collection locations within approximately one hour of Columbus.
• Use mobile devices and specialized equipment to collect field data according to defined project requirements.
• Follow detailed collection protocols to ensure data is captured accurately and consistently.
• Navigate assigned locations and complete designated routes independently.
• Communicate progress, technical issues, and field challenges to the project team.
• Complete assigned work and project deliverables on schedule.

Who you are

• You have reliable personal transportation and a valid driver’s license.
• You are technically savvy and comfortable learning new devices, applications, and equipment.
• You can work independently, stay organized, and carefully follow detailed instructions.
• You are dependable and comfortable navigating unfamiliar locations and environments.
• Experience with LiDAR, land surveying, GIS, mapping, or geospatial technology is a plus, but not required.
• Experience or a strong interest in hiking, outdoor recreation, location-based activities, or similar activities is a plus.

Physical & field requirements

The following are essential functions of this field-based role and must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
• Walk or hike up to approximately 5 miles at one time and up to approximately 10 miles over the course of a day.
• Navigate uneven, unpaved, and rough outdoor terrain.
• Carry approximately 15–20 pounds of field equipment in a backpack for sustained periods while walking or hiking.
• Work outdoors across varying terrain and typical seasonal weather conditions.

• 3-week contract
• Approximately 40 hours/week
• $1,000–$1,200/week, depending on relevant experience
• Occasional evening and weekend availability required
• Field-based work in Columbus and surrounding areas
• Reliable personal transportation required
