Field Equipment Maintenance Specialist

Summary:

Primarily responsible for the daily operations of the field equipmentcenter,butalsoparticipatesin the instructing the winter US Antarctic Program field safety training courses, the USAP Search & Rescue Winter Team and support of Operations groups going into the field.

Position Responsibilities:

• Responsible formaintaininga safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

• Complieswithall Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. 

• Repairs,maintains, and cleans field equipment including specialty items (i.e.,a variety of sleds, tents, stoves,ice coringequipment, and climbing equipment).

• Facilitates the winter USAP Field Safety Training program at McMurdo Station providing detailed instruction oncold weathersurvival techniques, Risk Management, radio communications procedures, familiarization of surroundings, local weather, and basic first aid concepts specific to the wintering population.

• Participates as an auxiliary member of the Winter USAP Search and Rescue Team, engaged in all support training exercises and actual incident response deployments. May berequiredtoassistwith Emergency Operations Center activities during prolonged responses.

• Participatesin an annual inventory cycle count and ship-offload activities.

• Tracks field equipment that is issued to and returned from sponsored events.

• Operates forklift, snow machines, and tracked vehicles and responsible for basic upkeep and maintenance of these resources.

• Operates industrial sewingmachineto repair stock,modifyand fabricate items asrequired.

• Frequently needs to lift and push 50 pounds and constantly moves20-poundobjects.

• Interacts with National Science Foundation,military,and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner.

• Employees and contractors may,in the course ofperforming their official duties, have access to a wide variety of personal identifiable and sensitive information (PII/SI) electronically and in hard copy. Personal and sensitive data including Social Security numbers, date and place of birth, demographic data, home addresses/telephone numbers/personal email addresses, passport numbers, bank account numbers, performance reviews, reviewer identity tied to performance reviews, unfunded proposals, proprietary parts of funded proposals, and other similar information should be protected according to Federal regulations and United States Antarctic Program policy, and only disclosed in accordance with the United States Antarctic program requirements.

RequiredEducation, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

• High School diploma orGED

• Minimum of two years’ experience inlogisticsor supply

• At least one of the two yearsmust include experience in maintenance of outdoor equipment

ExpectedSkills and Competencies:

• Complies withapplicable safety, environment, health and waste management policies and procedures. 

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences

• Glacial travel experience and basic mountaineering experience

• Exposure to computerized data management

• Expedition outfitting, Arctic/Antarctic field work, and/or a background in outdoor education or guiding

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

• Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

• Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

• Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

• Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

• Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

• Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives.

• Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

• No clearance requirement but the contract and/or the siterequiresUS Citizenship to be approved for access. (includes NACI / T1, MRPT, CAC):  Mustbe able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
