Finance Manager, Vermont

The Finance Manager serves as the primary finance partner for the Vermont State Chapter, providing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, analysis, reporting, compliance oversight, and decision-support services. The role may support large, complex, or multi-program Business Units and is responsible for managing significant financial activities, processes, and deliverables that support organizational priorities and effective stewardship of resources. The role works closely with Business Unit leadership, conservation, philanthropy, operations, and program teams to support organizational priorities and informed decision-making. Working collaboratively with the Finance Director and other finance, accounting, grants, contracts, and operations colleagues, the Finance Manager fosters strong partnerships and supports the effective delivery of finance services across assigned Business Units.

The Finance Manager leads day-to-day financial management activities for assigned Business Units, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, analysis, compliance oversight, and financial planning support. The role independently manages significant financial processes and deliverables, develops recommendations and action plans, and supports informed decision-making, effective resource allocation, and achievement of organizational priorities.

The role develops financial insights and recommendations that inform planning, resource allocation, and operational decision-making. The Finance Manager promotes consistent financial practices, supports the implementation of financial strategies and organizational priorities, and contributes to the long-term financial sustainability of assigned Business Unit(s).

This role will be hybrid, with at least 2 days per week of required in-person attendance at our Montpelier, VT office.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

• Serves as the primary finance partner for one or more assigned Business Units, including larger, more complex, multi-program, or multiple Business Unit portfolios, as assigned.

• Supports financial planning activities, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, fiscal year-end activities and multi-year financial planning.

• Leads assigned finance processes, reporting cycles, financial analyses, and deliverables, ensuring timely completion, accuracy, compliance, and alignment with organizational requirements.

• Provides financial analysis, modeling, reporting, projections, and recommendations to support planning, resource allocation, operational decision-making, and achievement of organizational objectives.

• Monitors financial performance, identifies risks and opportunities, evaluates alternatives, and recommends actions to support effective financial management and operational outcomes.

• May serve as a financial resource to leadership teams, Boards of Trustees, Finance Committees, and other stakeholder groups, as appropriate.

• Maintains the accuracy, integrity, and effective administration of financial data, systems, processes and internal controls.

• Supports implementation of financial strategies, operational improvements, organizational initiatives, and finance process enhancements.

• Monitors compliance with TNC policies, financial controls, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements; identifies and escalates potential issues.

• Collaborates with finance, accounting, grants, contracts, operations, and other functional teams to promote coordinated service delivery, clear accountability, and consistent financial management practices.

• May administer or support specialized finance processes, projects, funding portfolios, contracts, awards, or operational activities relevant to assigned areas of responsibility.

• May provide technical guidance, training, and support to colleagues and stakeholders and may coordinate the work of other finance staff.

What You’ll Bring:

• Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 4 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
• Technical experience with grants award accounting issues.
• Experience using accounting and financial reporting systems.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience supporting annual budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, fiscal year-end activities, and multi-year financial planning.

• Experience analyzing financial performance and identifying trends, risks, opportunities, and corrective actions.

• Experience supporting grants, contracts, awards, fundraising initiatives, restricted funding, or complex program budgets.

• Experience developing financial models, reports, presentations, and recommendations for management decision-making.

• Experience working collaboratively with conservation, philanthropy, operations, grants, contracts, accounting, and program teams.

• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience using enterprise financial systems.

• Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

• Experience operating in a complex, mission-driven, geographically dispersed organization.

• Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
• CPA, CIA, MBA, or other relevant professional certification may be preferred.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $77,860 - $86,530. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
