Functional Skills English & Maths Tutor

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality teaching and learning sessions, workshops, and tutorials in line with curriculum requirements and individual learner needs
• Assess learners’ English and Mathematics, identifying areas for improvement and tailoring teaching methods accordingly
• Develop and deliver engaging and interactive sessions using a variety of teaching techniques and resources to enhance learner understanding and engagement
• Provide individualised support to learners, addressing specific learning needs through one-on-one meetings and additional learning resources
• Monitor and track learners' progress, providing regular feedback and implementing strategies to address areas of weakness
• Set and mark assignments, tests, and examinations, providing constructive feedback to learners to support their development
• Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices, contribute to curriculum development, and participate in team meetings and training sessions
• Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment, promoting learner participation, motivation, and confidence in English and Mathematics
• Communicate regularly with learners, employers, and relevant stakeholders to provide updates on progress and address concerns
• Stay up to date with developments in English, and Mathematics education, curriculum changes, and teaching methodologies to continuously improve teaching standards.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

• Minimum of A-level or equivalent qualification in English (essential)
• Minimum of A-level or equivalent qualification in Mathematics (essential)
• Qualified teacher status (e.g., Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS) or a commitment to obtaining it (essential)
• Full, clean driving license and access to a vehicle insured for business use (essential)

• Proven experience in teaching or tutoring English, and Mathematics up to at least Functional Skills level 2 or equivalent in all subjects (essential)
• Experience working with adult learners from diverse backgrounds and with varying abilities (essential)
• Experience of developing stimulating and engaging maths programmes (essential)
• Experience of using data analysis to inform teaching and improve learner outcomes (desired)

• Strong knowledge of the Functional Skills English and maths curriculums and assessment requirements
• Excellent understanding of teaching methodologies and strategies for supporting diverse learners
• Familiarity with assessment practices and methods for tracking learner progress
• Knowledge of Safeguarding, GDPR and Equality and Diversity in education
• Awareness of current educational policies and initiatives impacting English and Mathematics education

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with learners and create a positive learning environment (essential)
• Patient, adaptable, and able to differentiate teaching and learning to meet individual learner needs (essential)
• Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to plan and deliver sessions effectively (essential)
• Proficient in using technology and resources to enhance teaching and learning experiences (essential)
