Head of Platform Engineering Team

We are looking for a Head of Platform Engineering Team to take technical ownership of our SAP msg.PIA insurance platform and lead its development across our Latvian and Estonian engineering teams.

In this role, you will provide technical leadership for the platform, strengthen engineering practices, and help the team build secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions. You will work closely with engineers, architects, and stakeholders across both countries, while staying hands-on where your expertise adds the most value.

You bring strong, up-to-date SAP development expertise, ideally in ABAP and msg.PIA or a comparable insurance platform. You combine sound architectural judgment with the ability to guide others and turn complex technical topics into clear decisions and direction.

What You'll Do
Technical ownership

• Own technical design decisions within agreed architectural principles, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure, testable, and aligned with the broader system direction.

• Set coding standards, engineering best practices, code quality expectations, documentation standards, and technical ways of working across the LV/EE team.

Engineering leadership

• Review code and mentor engineers through technical feedback, design discussions, pairing, and knowledge sharing.

• Support the team with complex technical topics and unblock challenging problems.

• Break down complex technical problems into implementable tasks, clarifying dependencies, sequencing, risks, assumptions, and options.

Technical representation

• Act as the team's technical point of contact and represent the team in technical discussions with stakeholders, architects, and other teams.

• Stay hands-on where it creates the most value (code, design, troubleshooting), without becoming the critical path for delivery.

Technical backlog & continuous improvement

• Own the technical backlog, including technical debt, refactoring, reliability improvements, engineering enablement, tooling, and maintainability work.

• Ensure technical backlog items are visible, clearly explained, and prioritized through clear trade-offs with product and delivery stakeholders.

• Partner with the Engineering Manager on capability gaps, engineering maturity, and the team's technical growth needs.

What We're Looking For

• Proven hands-on experience with SAP development (ABAP; OO ABAP is a plus), ideally including SAP insurance solutions such as msg.PIA or a comparable core insurance platform.

• A track record of owning technical architecture and design decisions in a production environment, not just implementing specifications.

• Experience setting technical standards and practices for a team and mentoring engineers through code reviews and design discussions.

• Comfortable acting as a technical point of contact for architects, product owners, and stakeholders, with the ability to explain trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Experience working across distributed or cross-country teams and with shared codebases is a strong plus (e.g. coordinating changes that affect multiple markets or business units).

• Fluent English.

Nice to have

• Experience with insurance industry systems and processes (policy administration, claims, etc.).

• Exposure to DevOps/CI/CD practices, test automation, or platform reliability work.

• Prior experience in a technical or architect-adjacent role.

Location: Tallinn, Riga
Salary: Estonia: EUR 5,100-5,900 gross / Latvia: EUR 4,700-5,500 gross
