About this role
Department: People & Culture
Reports To: VP of Growth
Classification: Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)
Compensation: $55,000–$65,000 annually, depending on experience
Location: Must be located in Arizona near our Phoenix or Tucson clinic.
Why This Role Exists
Odyssey Autism is growing, and our people are the reason. We provide ABA therapy to children between 2-12 on the autism spectrum, and every family we serve depends on a team that is supported, developed, and set up to do their best work. This is a brand-new seat built for someone who wants to own the HR function hands-on and grow with the company as we do.
You will be the day-to-day face of HR for our clinical and administrative teams — the person employees come to with questions, the one who makes onboarding feel like a warm welcome, and the operator who keeps our policies, benefits, and records buttoned up. You will work directly with the VP of Growth, who oversees Growth and People & Culture, and you will have room to take on more as you prove yourself. If you are an A-player who wants to build something rather than just maintain it, this is for you.
Who We're Looking For
We hire and grow A-players — people who are in the top tier of talent for what we pay, who raise the bar for everyone around them, and who own outcomes without being managed to them. In practice that means:
- You do what you say you'll do, on time, without follow-up.
- You spot the thing that's about to fall through the cracks and catch it before anyone asks.
- You'd rather flag a problem early and be told "we've got it" than sit on it.
- You want to grow — and you understand that growth is earned by delivering results, not by tenure.
This role is designed for someone who wants a career in HR, not just a job in it. As Odyssey grows, this seat can grow with you.
Position Summary
The HR Generalist supports the full employee lifecycle at Odyssey Autism — onboarding, terminations and offboarding, policy administration and rollout, benefits coordination with our vendors, and the daily HR inquiries and requests that keep our teams supported. This is a broad, hands-on role: you will work across most areas of HR and be the primary point of contact for employees on people matters. You will operate with meaningful independence once expectations are set, exercise good judgment, and know when to escalate. The bar is simple: employees feel supported, our records and policies stay compliant, and nothing falls through the cracks.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Onboarding & Offboarding
- Own the new-hire onboarding experience end-to-end — create employee records in BambooHR, assign and track required policy signatures, and ensure new hires are set up to succeed from day one
- Coordinate with internal and external partners to provision accounts, complete I-9 verification, background checks, and confirm every onboarding task is done on time
- Deliver a welcoming, organized first-week experience that reflects Odyssey's culture and core values
- Process offboarding for all separation types — update BambooHR, notify partners, coordinate equipment recovery, and ensure clean, well-documented exits.
- Support managers on performance-based and for-cause separations administratively; prepare paperwork and process post-separation steps after the decision-maker delivers the conversation
2. Policy Administration & Rollout
- Maintain the employee handbook and company policies — keep them current, consistent, and accessible
- Manage policy rollouts end-to-end: coordinate signatures in BambooHR, communicate changes clearly to staff, and confirm acknowledgment across all locations
- Track which employees have signed which active policies and close gaps proactively
- Draft policy updates and employee communications for review; flag where legal or HR-compliance review is required before anything is finalized
3. Benefits Administration
- Serve as the primary liaison with our benefits vendors (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and any ancillary plans) to ensure employees receive everything they're entitled to
- Manage open enrollment, new-hire enrollments, qualifying life events, and terminations of coverage accurately and on time
- Field and resolve employee benefits questions; act as the go-between with carriers and brokers when issues arise
- Reconcile benefits enrollments and support the accuracy of benefits-related payroll deductions
- Ensure benefits-related compliance obligations (e.g., COBRA, ACA, plan notices) are met, coordinating with vendors and flagging anything that needs specialized review
4. Daily HR Support
- Be the first point of contact for employee HR inquiries and requests — respond promptly, accurately, wisely, and with a service mindset.
- Support employee relations matters at the front line; document appropriately and escalate sensitive issues (accommodation, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, legal threats) to the VP of Growth immediately
- Maintain accurate, confidential employee records and ensure HR data integrity across systems
- Support PTO, leave, and verification-of-employment requests
5. HRIS & Administration (BambooHR)
- Serve as the day-to-day owner of BambooHR — employee records, onboarding workflows, policy signatures, PTO, and reporting
- Run periodic audits of employee records to ensure accuracy and policy-signature completeness; report gaps and fix them
- Generate HR reports for the VP of Growth as needed (headcount, turnover, onboarding status, etc.)
- Maintain onboarding materials, checklists, and templates, updating them as policies and programs change
6. General HR
- Take on additional HR responsibilities consistent with industry-standard Generalist scope as the role and company grow — HR compliance support, recruiting coordination, performance-process support, culture and engagement initiatives, and special projects as assigned
What Success Looks Like
We believe in being clear about the bar. Here's what "great" looks like in this role:
First 90 days
- Fully up to speed on BambooHR, our active policies, and our benefits plans
- Owning onboarding and offboarding independently, start to finish
- Employees know who you, trust you, and they come to you with questions
First 6 months
- Benefits vendor relationships run through you smoothly; enrollment and issue resolution happen without the VP of Growth in the loop
- Our employee records and policy signatures are audit-clean
- At least one policy or process rollout delivered end-to-end
First year
- You're the trusted day-to-day HR operator for the company — proactive, reliable, and looked to for answers
- You've identified and driven improvements to at least one HR process, not just maintained the status quo
- You're ready to take on more scope as Odyssey grows
Qualifications
Required
- 2+ years of HR experience, ideally in a Generalist or HR Coordinator role with exposure across the employee lifecycle
- Working knowledge of onboarding, offboarding, benefits administration, and HR compliance basics
- Experience with an HRIS platform (BambooHR strongly preferred)
- Strong written and verbal communication — you can draft a clear policy announcement and handle a sensitive employee conversation with equal care
- Exceptional attention to detail and discretion with confidential information
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing requests, and follow through without being chased
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams)
Preferred
- Experience in healthcare, ABA, or a multi-site clinical environment
- Familiarity with benefits compliance (COBRA, ACA, ERISA basics), FMLA/leave administration, and multi-state or Arizona employment considerations
- HR certification (SHRM-CP / PHR) or active pursuit of one
- Experience supporting recruiting or employee engagement programs
