Junior Civil Technologist

We have an exciting opportunity for a Junior Civil Technologist, Field Services to join our team in our St. John’s NL office.

This position is intended for a recent graduate or early-career technologist who enjoys practical, hands-on work and wants to build a long-term career in surveying, construction inspection and municipal infrastructure.

You will initially work closely with our existing team of experienced civil technologists who will provide field training, technical guidance and ongoing mentorship. As your skills and confidence develop, you will take on increasing responsibility for field assignments, construction documentation, survey activities and coordination of field services work.

This is a field-focused position. Candidates should be comfortable travelling throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, working outdoors in varying weather and terrain, and supporting projects in remote or challenging locations. During periods of reduced field activity, you will support survey-data processing, Civil 3D drafting, reporting, estimating and municipal design assignments.

Your Key Field Services Responsibilities:

• Assist with and progressively lead topographic and infrastructure surveys.
• Support construction inspection and resident-services assignments under the guidance of experienced staff.
• Complete site investigations, measurements, photographs and field documentation.
• Maintain accurate daily field records, survey notes, inspection reports and construction documentation.
• Safely operate, care for and organize survey instruments and other field equipment.
• Communicate professionally with project managers, contractors, clients, property owners and members of the public.
• Travel to project sites throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, including remote locations.
• Work outdoors in varying weather, terrain and site conditions.
• Follow CBCL and project-specific health and safety requirements.

Office and Technical Responsibilities During Non-Field Periods

• Download, organize and process survey information.
• Prepare existing conditions plans and other drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
• Assist with municipal design and drafting for water, sewer, stormwater and roadway projects.
• Prepare inspection records, technical memoranda and report content.
• Assist with quantity calculations and construction cost estimates.
• Support engineers and technologists with project delivery and contract-administration activities.

Career Growth

This position is intended to develop into a key field-services resource within our St. John's office. As experience and technical abilities grow, the successful candidate will take increasing ownership of surveying, construction inspection and field-coordination activities while supporting the development of future junior staff.

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

• This opportunity is intended for a recent graduate or early-career technologist. Previous co-op, summer, survey, construction or municipal experience is helpful but not required.
• Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technician, Geomatics or a related program. Students completing their final academic term may also be considered.
• Introductory experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D through education, co-op work or employment. Additional training and mentoring will be provided.
• Hold a valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites;

Assets, Not Requirements

• Co-op, summer or employment experience in surveying, construction, municipal infrastructure, consulting or other field-based work would be considered an asset.
• Familiarity with survey equipment, data collectors or survey data processing.
• Exposure to GIS, quantity calculations, cost estimating or municipal piped systems.
• Safety training or previous experience on active construction sites.
