Overview
The Laboratory Support Officer provides essential operational support services to ensure efficient laboratory functioning.
The role focuses on housekeeping, stock management, waste management, archiving, logistics, and non-technical support activities, enabling technical staff to focus on laboratory testing processes.
Key Responsibilities
Housekeeping Support
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organisation.
- Manage laboratory waste streams and disposal processes.
- Support infection prevention and contamination control measures.
- Perform routine housekeeping activities.
- Support the office and fulfilment sites with regular cleaning and housekeeping.
Stock and Inventory
- Receive deliveries and unpack consumables.
- Maintain stock rooms and storage areas.
- Monitor stock levels and replenish routine consumables.
- Rotate stock and monitor expiry dates.
- Assist with stock counts and inventory audits.
Archiving and Records
- Archive specimens and laboratory records.
- Retrieve archived materials when required.
- Maintain archive inventories and traceability records.
- Support document storage and retention activities.
Logistics and Administration
- Prepare referral shipments and packaging.
- Support internal movement of samples and materials.
- Assist with equipment cleaning schedules.
- Maintain laboratory notice boards and operational documentation.
Quality and Safety
- Comply with laboratory safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate support activity records.
- Report hazards, incidents, and non-conformances.
- Participate in training and competency assessments relevant to the role.
Prerequisites / Requirements
- Previous experience in a warehouse, fulfilment, logistics, or similar operational environment (preferred but not essential)
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage stock and maintain accurate records
- Attention to detail and ability to follow processes and procedures
- Basic IT skills (e.g. stock systems, email, spreadsheets)
- Strong work ethic with a reliable and punctual approach
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised warehouse and office environment
