Mechanic

BASIC FUNCTION

The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding heavy construction equipment, diesel engines, and mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems. This position supports equipment operations in the yard, at project locations, and aboard barges.

The position requires the ability and willingness to travel out of town and stay aboard a barge as needed to support project and maintenance requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The principal responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Heavy equipment repair: Diagnose and repair heavy construction equipment, including cranes, excavators, bulldozers, loaders, forklifts, and other equipment used in construction operations. Perform engine overhauls, tune-ups, and repairs or replacement of transmissions, drivetrains, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and related systems.
• Preventive maintenance: Perform routine inspections and scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, fuel and air filter replacement, lubrication, fluid checks, and adjustments. Identify worn or damaged components and address issues before equipment failure occurs.
• Barge equipment maintenance: Inspect, maintain, repair, and rebuild barge-mounted equipment, including cranes, winches, pumps, air compressors, generators, and associated machinery.
• Barge mechanical and utility systems: Troubleshoot and repair ballast, potable water, saltwater, fuel, and compressed-air systems, including associated pumps, valves, hoses, piping, and connections.
• Electrical and auxiliary systems: Troubleshoot and maintain generators, electric motors, lighting, AC and DC electrical systems, and engine, crane, and general alarm systems. Perform or coordinate air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance and repairs within the scope of training and qualifications.
• Troubleshooting and repair verification: Read and interpret equipment manuals, service instructions, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics. Use appropriate diagnostic tools to identify malfunctions and test equipment after repairs to verify proper operation before returning it to service.
• Documentation and coordination: Maintain accurate daily service, repair, and preventive maintenance records. Identify and request necessary parts and supplies, and communicate equipment condition, repair needs, and anticipated downtime to the appropriate supervisor.
• Safe work practices: Follow company safety procedures, equipment isolation and lockout/tagout requirements, and applicable site and barge rules. Use required personal protective equipment, maintain an orderly work area, and promptly report unsafe equipment or conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Demonstrated experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy equipment and diesel engines.
• Working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, with the ability to service equipment used in construction and barge operations.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics and safely use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a crew, prioritize repairs, communicate effectively with supervisors and equipment operators, and maintain accurate maintenance records.

TRAVEL AND WORK SCHEDULE

This position requires work at company yards, field locations, and aboard barges. The employee must be available for out-of-town assignments and overnight stays aboard a barge as needed, which may include extended periods away from home.

Work schedules may vary based on project requirements and equipment needs and may include overtime, weekends, and response to equipment breakdowns.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in shop, outdoor, construction, and marine environments, with exposure to weather, noise, vibration, grease, and operating machinery.

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including boarding and moving around barges; climbing ladders and stairs; standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching; handling tools and equipment components; and working in areas with limited access. Appropriate lifting equipment or assistance must be used when necessary to safely handle heavy components.
