Job Overview:
The Medical Director will oversee and provide clinical leadership to ensure the highest standards of patient care in a home-based hospice environment. This individual will lead a
multidisciplinary team, guide medical staff in delivering exceptional care, and support the
mission of providing compassionate and dignified care to patients with terminal illnesses. This position is considered PER DIEM and is NOT benefit-eligible.
Key Responsibilities:
• Clinical Leadership:
◦ Lead the clinical team in the development and implementation of individualized
care plans for hospice patients.
◦ Provide medical oversight and guidance to hospice nurses and other healthcare
professionals.
◦ Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to hospice
care.
◦ Monitor and evaluate the quality of medical care provided to patients in the home
setting.
• Patient Care:
◦ Conduct patient assessments to determine eligibility for hospice care and establish
care plans.
◦ Review and approve medications, treatments, and interventions as required.
◦ Provide direct care to patients when necessary, particularly in complex cases or
when medical consultation is needed.
◦ Address and resolve any clinical concerns or issues raised by patients or families.
• Collaboration & Communication:
◦ Work closely with interdisciplinary teams (nursing, social work, chaplaincy, and
other disciplines) to ensure holistic care for patients.
◦ Communicate with family members to provide updates, answer questions, and
ensure patient and family satisfaction.
◦ Collaborate with community healthcare providers and specialists to coordinate
patient care effectively.
• Education & Training:
◦ Provide education and training to medical staff on best practices, new hospice
regulations, and clinical developments.
◦ Offer guidance and support to staff regarding symptom management, palliative
care, and end-of-life issues.
◦ Stay current on hospice and palliative care advancements, ensuring the agency’s
practices are evidence-based.
• Quality Assurance:
◦ Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care outcomes.
◦ Review and evaluate patient outcomes and feedback to improve services.
◦ Monitor patient care documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and
compliance with all regulations.
• Administrative Responsibilities:
◦ Participate in strategic planning and policy development related to medical
services and patient care.
◦ Assist with ensuring efficient use of resources.
◦ Provide medical expertise for agency-wide committees and meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
• Education & Experience:
◦ Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from
an accredited medical school.
◦ Board-certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine or related specialty
(preferred).
◦ A minimum of 2 years of experience in palliative care, hospice care, or home
healthcare.
◦ Prior experience in a leadership or supervisory role in a clinical setting is highly
preferred.
• Licensure & Certifications:
◦ Valid, unencumbered state medical license in good standing.
◦ Board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine preferred.
• Skills & Abilities:
◦ Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to guide and inspire
healthcare teams.
◦ Excellent clinical judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
◦ In-depth knowledge of hospice care principles, regulations, and quality standards.
◦ Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
◦ Ability to manage complex cases and work collaboratively with a
multidisciplinary team.
◦ Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with patients, families,
and team members.
Requirements:
* Internet-capable Computer, Smart Phone and/or Tablet (iPad/Android) for accessing and working within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
