About this role

The Mental Health Worker (MHW) provides direct, hands-on support and supervision to residents of the NPCRS Adult Residential Facility (ARF) / Crisis Residential Program (CRP) in Vallejo. This is an unlicensed direct care role responsible for resident safety monitoring, activities of daily living (ADL) support, therapeutic milieu engagement, and observational documentation consistent with NPCRS clinical standards and applicable Title 22 and Title 9 regulatory requirements.

This is a hands-on, front-line role requiring patience, sound judgment, and genuine compassion for adults living with serious mental illness, co-occurring conditions, and acute psychiatric crisis. The MHW is often the staff member with the most direct, sustained contact with residents during a shift and plays a central role in maintaining a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment.



The MHW reports administratively to the Program Director and receives on-shift clinical and programmatic direction from the LVN, LPT, or Clinical Team on duty. The MHW works closely with nursing and clinical staff to support each resident's needs and service plan and to promptly identify and report changes in condition, behavior, or safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or experience in psychology, human services, or a related field preferred, not required.
  • Minimum 0-1 year of direct care, behavioral health, or related experience for MHW I; minimum 1-3 years for MHW II; minimum 3+ years, including demonstrated crisis-response experience, for MHW III.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record clearance consistent with Health and Safety Code section 1522 and CCLD requirements applicable to community care facility personnel.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Completion of facility-approved crisis intervention/de-escalation training (e.g., Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or equivalent) within the timeframe required by facility policy.
  • Working knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, Title 22 personnel and supervision requirements applicable to direct care staff in Adult Residential Facilities and, where applicable, Title 9 requirements for crisis residential treatment sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm, patient, and professional when supporting individuals with serious mental illness or acute psychiatric crisis.
  • Strong observational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Certification in Mental Health First Aid preferred.
  • Bilingual or multilingual capabilities preferred, not required.
