Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I. The selected candidate will join the Bridge Maintenance group with the Department of Public Works to perform the following duties:
The Motor Equipment Operator I will perform the following duties:
- Assist with installing guard rails and handrails and perform miscellaneous carpentry work to provide adequate safety structures.
- Assist with pouring concrete, filling pavement cracks with asphalt, and bituminous concrete on bridge surfaces to make adequate repairs.
- Assist in the repair or replacement of damaged structural components, including decking, expansion plates, retaining walls, railing, beams, and footings, to increase the life of the structure as well as maintain its safety.
- Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
- Operate a dump truck and other light-duty vehicles in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies to and from repair jobs.
- Operate light automotive and medium-duty power mowers for vegetative maintenance of public rights-of-way and other municipally owned properties.
- Operate equipment to carry materials between work sites.
- Operate a snowplow during snow events.
- Operate a backhoe.
- Operate weed eaters along with pole saws and chain saws.
- Perform sandblasting and chipping to prepare surface areas for maintenance and painting.
A pre-employment physical required.
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License - Class B (VA or NC)
CDL Hiring Bonus:
Newly hired employees with a valid Class B or A CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
- $1,000 with first paycheck
- $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
- $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.Skills:
