Job Summary:
The Pastry Department Assistant supports daily production in the bakery by preparing, baking, and decorating a variety of pastries, cakes, and baked goods. This role ensures high-quality presentation and freshness of all bakery products while maintaining cleanliness, safety, and efficiency in the pastry area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and production of pastries, cakes, cookies, and other baked goods.
- Follow recipes and guidelines for mixing, baking, and decorating products.
- Operate bakery equipment such as mixers, ovens, and icing tools safely and efficiently.
- Decorate cakes and desserts according to store standards or customer specifications.
- Maintain proper inventory levels by preparing ingredients and monitoring the stock of supplies.
- Ensure all baked goods meet quality, freshness, and presentation standards.
- Keep workstations, tools, and equipment clean and sanitized in compliance with food safety regulations.
- Assist customers with bakery-related inquiries when needed.
- Support the Pastry Chef and bakery team in daily operations and special orders.
Skills & competencies:
- Previous experience in a bakery or pastry environment preferred.
- Knowledge of baking techniques, ingredient handling, and cake decorating.
- Strong attention to detail and creativity in product presentation.
- Ability to follow recipes, instructions, and food safety standards.
- Good time management and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Flexible schedule, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to lift to 25–50 lbs occasionally.
Education & experience:
- Vocational training or certification in Baking, Pastry Arts, or Culinary Arts is an asset.
- Previous experience in a bakery, pastry shop, or food production environment is preferred but not required.
- Food safety or hygiene certification is an advantage.
