About this role
PhD: Surface Physics and Computational Analytics for Thin-Film Microstructure Characterization
Bosch Sensortec GmbH is a technology leader in sensing solutions based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and dedicated to the consumer electronics world. We develop and market key technologies for smartphones and tablets, hearables, wearables, smartglasses, augmented and virtual reality applications, gaming devices and many more. Our sensors improve people’s well-being and lifestyle and enable consumer electronic devices to sense the world around us. MEMS sensors are therefore an essential part of the foundation for a connected world. Bosch Sensortec GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH.
Drive cutting-edge research at the intersection of materials science, thin-film engineering, and MEMS innovation. In this PhD position, you will create new material concepts, develop advanced characterization approaches, and translate simulation insights into real-world semiconductor applications.
- Participate in the development of novel materials for the upcoming generations of MEMS devices
- Provide insights into existing characterization methods, investigate and develop new methodologies for the study of newly developed thin films
- Coordinate computational simulation work for the prediction of physical/chemical properties of metallic and dielectric layers
- Study how volatile elements are stored at the surface and in the bulk of thin films deposited via different deposition techniques
- Plan experiments to verify simulated predictions, and to test characterization methods
- Work in parallel with expert engineers from the Robert Bosch GmbH ecosystem and academics
- Participate in Intellectual Property filings, present your research at international conferences, and publish the outcomes of your studies
Qualifications
- Personality: enthusiastic, curious, collaborative, creative, with a keen spirit for innovation, predisposition to teamwork and capability to perform under pressure
- Working Practice: effective team player with a focused, methodical, and highly independent working style
- Experience: a good knowledge of semiconductor fabrication and measurement techniques is required; direct experience with MEMS manufacturing is highly beneficial; previous industrial experience will be a strong plus; knowledge or experience with simulation methodologies (e.g., DFT) is a plus
- Languages: very good English skills, German is beneficial
- Education: Master's Degree or diploma in engineering or natural sciences (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Material Science) or similar fields with outstanding results
We offer you an inspiring and challenging environment in which to successfully complete your PhD within a three-year program. You will work closely with an interdisciplinary team and have access to state-of-the-art technologies and resources. In addition, we offer you the opportunity to participate in national and international conferences to present your research results, while getting access to the global Bosch PhD network, academic community and other events.
