The Department of Speech and Hearing Science seeks a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar to work with Dr. Christina Roup on an NIH-funded clinical trial investigating the efficacy of low-gain hearing aids for adults experiencing functional hearing difficulties. This innovative research addresses the growing population of adults who report significant listening challenges despite having normal or near-normal audiometric hearing thresholds.

The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of a multisite clinical research program designed to evaluate the impact of low-gain amplification on communication function, listening effort, quality of life, and real-world hearing outcomes. This position provides an exceptional opportunity to engage in clinically relevant, translational research with the potential to influence future hearing healthcare practices and intervention approaches.

The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of audiologists, researchers, and trainees and will be supported in developing an independent line of research aligned with the broader goals of the laboratory. The postdoctoral scholar will receive dedicated faculty mentorship in grant writing, study design, and publication, alongside opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate trainees. Opportunities for presenting research at national and international conferences and contributing to grant development and high-impact publications are expected.

Key Research Areas

• Clinical efficacy of low-gain hearing aid technology for adults with functional hearing difficulties
• Assessment of speech understanding, listening effort, communication participation, and patient-reported outcomes
• Identification of factors associated with treatment response and individual variability in intervention outcomes
• Real-world hearing performance
• Development of evidence-based approaches for the evaluation and management of adults with hearing difficulties not fully explained by traditional audiometric measures

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to participant recruitment, enrollment, intervention delivery, and retention efforts for NIH-funded clinical trials
• Conduct data collection and assist with statistical analyses, and interpretation of research findings
• Coordinate clinical trial activities, including protocol implementation, regulatory compliance, and data quality assurance
• Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific presentations
• Assist with grant preparation, IRB submissions, study documentation, and laboratory management
• Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate research assistants
• Collaborate on interdisciplinary projects within the department to evaluate auditory, cognitive, and social outcome measures.
• Disseminate findings at regional, national, and international professional meetings

Minimum Education:

Au.D. or AuD/Ph.D. in Audiology, Hearing Science, Speech and Hearing Science, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Public Health, Psychology, or a related field. Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills. Significant experience conducting behavioral research with human participants.

• Experience with adult hearing aid fitting and verification
• Strong research productivity and scientific writing skills
• Experience conducting human-subjects research
• Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication abilities
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment

Desired Qualifications:

• Current state license in audiology or eligible for audiology licensure in Ohio
• Experience conducting clinical trials or intervention research
• Background in adult audiologic assessment, hearing rehabilitation, or hearing healthcare outcomes
• Experience with REDCap, R, SAS, SPSS, MATLAB, Python, or other data management and statistical software
• Knowledge of patient-reported outcome measures and quality-of-life assessment
• Experience working with diverse populations and community-engaged research methodologies
