Job Purpose:
To work as part of a Huawei Programming Languages team, to perform original research, research transfer and engineering work on programming languages, formal methods and agentic programming in the Huawei Edinburgh Office.

The role will focus on programming language technologies for the AI era and agentic programming systems for software development, including program understanding, code generation, program transformation, automated testing and debugging, and improving the reliability of AI-generated code.

Key Responsibilities:
• Contribute to the investigation of key technologies and research directions in programming languages, compilers, formal methods and agentic programming, supporting Huawei’s capabilities in programming language and AI programming solutions
• Contribute to the design and development of advanced compiler frameworks for concurrency and control, and tooling for agentic programming, code generation, verification and validation
• Understand and apply technologies for AI-driven software development, including program understanding, code generation, automated testing and debugging, and improving the reliability of AI-generated software
• Support the development of research prototypes and engineering tools, and contribute to the transfer of research results into practical technologies and solutions for real-world software development scenarios

Person Specification:
List details of knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications needed to do the job:

Required:
• Degree in computer science, mathematics or a related discipline
• Excellent programming, research and analytical skills
• Good knowledge of modern programming languages and software development, including language concepts, applications, compilation and tooling, covering object-oriented and/or functional programming paradigms
• Familiarity with modern AI and LLM technologies, with an interest in their application to software development and programming tools
• Ability to quickly pick up, understand and apply emerging software technologies in the AI era
• Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to work on real-world software systems and development tools
• Professional working proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese is required to support regular communication with HQ stakeholders and manage relevant business documentation

Desired (any of the following):
• Experience in programming language, compiler and/or programming framework design
• Experience with formal verification methods and tools
• Experience with agentic programming, coding agents, AI-assisted code generation, automated debugging or software migration
• Strong mathematical foundations of programming, including logic, type theory, semantics and formal reasoning
• Research or engineering experience in program analysis, verification, testing or AI for code
