Quality Engineer Intern

Overview

Titan America has an excellent opportunity for a Quality Control Lab Intern in the Quality Department at the Roanoke Cement Plant location in Troutville, VA. This position will report to the Quality Manager and will be responsible for testing cement and raw materials to meet ASTM standards (American Standards for Testing Materials).

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace in accordance with company policies, site-specific procedures, and MSHA requirements.
• Perform chemical and physical testing in accordance with applicable ASTM standards.
• Assist Process Control Technicians with daily assignments.
• Test water samples as required by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality permit.
• Collect material samples required for quality control testing.
• Analyze chemical and physical test data and prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
• Test specialty masonry products during production to verify color consistency.
• Inspect laboratory equipment regularly, troubleshoot issues, perform routine maintenance, and recommend improvements.

Special Projects:

• Help develop and refine statistical process control (SPC) capabilities using the new LDMS.
• Assist with developing maintenance logs in the new LDMS.
• Conduct a raw mill belt-cut study to evaluate variation in standard deviations between raw mills.
• Organize the laboratory by updating manuals and safety data sheets (SDS) and inventorying spare parts.
• Learn TOC/DSC analysis and develop TOC programs for kiln feed, raw mix, and raw materials.
• Develop XRD analysis standards for limestone additions in cement.

Qualifications

• Current student or recent graduate pursuing or holding a degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and professional demeanor.
• Strong attention to detail, analytical ability, and sound judgment to anticipate issues and recommend solutions.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and projects.
• Results-oriented attitude and commitment to achieving goals.
• Familiarity with automated laboratory equipment is preferred.
• Ability to work independently and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Willingness to accept responsibility and adapt to change.
