Summary

The School Nurse supports the health and wellness of both students and staff at Dakar Academy. This role includes promoting a healthy school environment, managing medical information, providing assessment and care for illness and injury, coordinating health services, and offering health education as needed.

Objectives of the Role

• Provide direct care and assessment for students and staff.
  
• Conduct health screenings and make referrals when appropriate.
  
• Manage and safeguard student and staff medical information.
  
• Develop and implement individualized health plans for students with chronic needs.
  
• Promote a safe and healthy school environment through prevention and education.
  
• Participate in the development and communication of school health policies and programs.
  
  

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

1. Direct Care

• Provide assessment and basic care for students and staff (and staff children) experiencing injury or acute illness during the school day.
  
• Respond to urgent needs after hours when necessary.
  
• Refer individuals to community health resources when appropriate.

2. Provision of Health Services

• Develop individual health care plans for students with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma, severe allergies).
  
• Create and manage emergency care plans for students with potential emergent health needs.
  
• Communicate health plans to appropriate school personnel and ensure proper implementation.
  
• Serve as a liaison among students, families, school staff, healthcare professionals, and community resources.

3. Data & Medical Information Management

• Collect and update student medical information annually (permissions, conditions, medications, allergies, immunizations) and enter it into RenWeb.
  
• Collect and securely store staff medical information for emergency use only.
  
• Assist with updating existing health policies and procedures.
  
• Help develop new health policies where needed to reflect current practice.

4. Promotion of a Healthy School Environment & Screenings

• Monitor immunization compliance and manage exclusions during infectious illness outbreaks.
  
• Assess the safety of the school environment, including extracurricular and athletic activities.
  
• Conduct annual health screenings (vision, BMI, athletic screenings).
  
• Collaborate in emergency and disaster response planning.

5. Health Education

• Provide health education to students individually or in classroom settings (e.g., health classes, science classes).
  
• Offer health-related programs or resources for staff, families, and the broader school community when appropriate.

Skills and Qualifications

• RN or BSN required
  
• School nursing experience preferred
  
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  
• Experience or training in cross-cultural settings preferred
  
• Commitment to follow the decisions and policies of the Dakar Academy Board and Administration
