Senior L1 Software Engineer – 5G/6G Baseband

About this role
We are seeking a highly skilled L1 Software Engineer to join Huawei’s Sweden Research Center in Stockholm and contribute to the research, architecture, design, and implementation of next-generation wireless baseband systems.
In this role, you will work on advanced Layer 1 (Physical Layer) software technologies for future wireless RAN systems. You will be responsible for translating advanced wireless algorithms into highly efficient real-time software implementations running on heterogeneous baseband computing platforms, including DSPs, CPUs, ASIC accelerators, and other specialized processing architectures.
You will collaborate closely with wireless algorithm researchers, SoC architects, DSP designers, compiler experts, and system engineers to develop high-performance and energy-efficient Layer 1 solutions for next-generation wireless communication systems.
Your work will directly contribute to Huawei's future wireless baseband architecture, software platform, and product competitiveness.
Responsibilities
You will contribute to the design, development, optimization, and validation of high-performance Layer 1 software for next-generation wireless RAN systems.
Layer 1 Software Development
Design and optimize Layer 1 / Physical Layer software for 5G evolution and next-generation wireless systems.
Develop real-time uplink and downlink baseband processing software.
Translate wireless algorithms into efficient implementations for embedded and heterogeneous baseband platforms.
Contribute to software architecture, module interfaces, data flow, and execution pipeline design.
PHY Algorithm Implementation & Optimization
Implement and optimize key PHY functions, including channel estimation, MIMO detection and precoding, beamforming, OFDM, synchronization, LDPC/Polar coding, HARQ, and Massive MIMO processing.
Evaluate implementation complexity, numerical accuracy, latency, throughput, and resource requirements.
Optimize workloads using SIMD/vectorization, multi-core parallelism, pipeline optimization, memory/cache optimization, DMA, and fixed-point techniques.
Analyze performance bottlenecks using profiling, tracing, and performance models.
Software–Hardware Co-Design
Collaborate with DSP, SoC, accelerator, compiler, and hardware teams to optimize Layer 1 workloads for target platforms.
Analyze workload characteristics and derive processor, memory, interconnect, and accelerator requirements.
Contribute to hardware/software partitioning and evaluation of new processor instructions, accelerators, and memory architectures.
Next-Generation Wireless Technologies
Investigate advanced PHY technologies and computing architectures for 5G-Advanced and 6G.
Develop proof-of-concept implementations for new algorithms and architectures.
Explore AI/ML-enabled physical-layer processing and contribute to future baseband software and SoC roadmaps.
Preferred Technical Expertise
Strong knowledge of 4G/5G NR Layer 1, OFDM, Massive MIMO, beamforming, channel estimation, MIMO processing, coding, HARQ, and link adaptation.
Experience with DSP, SIMD/vector processors, multi-core architectures, ARM/x86, embedded systems, or real-time software.
Strong skills in C/C++, parallel programming, memory optimization, low-latency software, and performance profiling.
Experience with ASIC/DSP/CPU/FPGA/accelerator-based baseband platforms and software–hardware co-design.
Knowledge of AI/ML for wireless PHY or AI accelerator architectures is a plus.
Qualifications
PhD, MSc, or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Wireless Communication, or a related field.
Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience, preferably in 4G/5G Layer 1 or wireless baseband development.
Experience developing or optimizing large-scale, high-performance software systems.
Experience with multi-core, DSP, FPGA, or accelerator-based heterogeneous computing platforms.
