Responsibilities

Position Overview

REI Systems is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for the design, development, testing, modernization, and operational support of complex enterprise applications for the ODOS Program. The successful candidate will lead critical engineering decisions, establish development practices, mentor engineers, and collaborate with architecture, product, UX, QA, DevOps, database, and operations teams. This role requires advanced full stack expertise, strong production troubleshooting skills, and demonstrated leadership within enterprise-scale Agile and DevSecOps environments.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership and Full Stack Engineering

• Lead the design, development, testing, and modernization of complex enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, Angular, React, and JavaScript.
• Design scalable backend services, business logic, microservices, RESTful APIs, and enterprise integrations.
• Lead development of reusable and maintainable Angular and React-based user interfaces and application components.
• Design integrations among front-end applications, backend services, databases, and external enterprise systems.
• Design and optimize PostgreSQL and Oracle SQL solutions, including complex queries, data-access patterns, and application data models.
• Lead modernization of legacy applications using modern Java, React, APIs, microservices, and cloud-native architectural patterns.
• Identify and address application scalability, reliability, maintainability, and performance concerns.

Architecture and Engineering

• Lead or provide significant input into application architecture and technical design decisions.
• Translate complex business, operational, and user requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Define and promote software engineering patterns, coding standards, reusable components, and development best practices.
• Evaluate frameworks, technologies, development tools, and design patterns, and lead code and design reviews for complex functionality.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and mid-level developers.
• Collaborate with enterprise architects, product owners, UX teams, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, database engineers, and other technical stakeholders.

Testing DevSecOps and CI CD

• Establish unit, integration, regression, and automated testing practices using JUnit, Cucumber, Selenium, TDD, and BDD where appropriate.
• Provide technical leadership for source-control, branching, pull-request, and code-review practices using Git/GitHub.
• Develop applications designed for automated build, test, deployment, and release through Jenkins and CI/CD pipelines.
• Partner with DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve deployment, reliability, observability, secure development, vulnerability remediation, and operational support.

Production Support and Observability

• Serve as a senior technical resource for complex production incidents and application performance issues.
• Use Splunk and New Relic to analyze logs, application traces, transaction performance, infrastructure metrics, errors, and system behavior during production incident triage.
• Lead root-cause analysis across application code, APIs, databases, integrations, infrastructure, and dependent services.
• Identify recurring failure patterns and recommend engineering changes to improve reliability, resiliency, observability, and performance.
• Partner with O&M, DevOps, infrastructure, database, and application teams to resolve high-impact issues and incorporate lessons learned into architecture, testing, monitoring, and engineering standards.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of software development experience with advanced Java and Spring Boot expertise.
• Advanced Angular or React and JavaScript expertise delivering complex full stack applications.
• Strong experience with RESTful APIs, microservices, distributed architectures, and Angular or React integration with Java/Spring Boot services.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle SQL, and relational database design and development.
• Experience with application architecture, technical design, code reviews, engineering standards, automated testing, Git/GitHub, Jenkins, and CI/CD.
• Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex production and application performance issues.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and provide technical leadership within an Agile development team.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Significant experience developing and modernizing applications in AWS, including Aurora and DynamoDB.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container-based deployment architectures.
• Strong experience with Splunk and New Relic for production observability, incident triage, root-cause analysis, and performance optimization.
• Experience designing cloud-native and microservices-based architectures.
• Experience with JUnit, Cucumber, Selenium, TDD, BDD, DevSecOps, and secure software development practices.
• Experience modernizing large legacy applications into modern Java and React architectures for enterprise-scale or federal government programs.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

Clearance: Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Clearance.

Location: Hybrid (2 Day per week in our Sterling, VA HQ on Tuesday and Wednesday)
