Job Summary
The Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for supporting the Company’s federal, state, and local tax compliance obligations, with a primary focus on sales and use tax matters across a multi-state footprint.
The Senior Tax Accountant works closely with internal teams and external advisors to ensure timely and accurate compliance filings and assists in monitoring tax legislation, taxability matters, and nexus considerations for the Company’s service-based operations.
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience, ideally within the services industry, and demonstrate a strong foundational understanding of state and local tax (SALT) principles.
This role offers exposure to sales and use tax, federal and state income taxes, and international tax matters within a growing organization.
Essential Functions
Sales & Use Tax Compliance and Analysis(60%)
- Prepare and support multi-state sales and use tax compliance, including data compilation, return preparation, and reconciliations.
- Research and analyze the sales and use tax treatment of transactions through the review of contracts, invoices, and other supporting documentation.
- Support use tax accruals and identify potential exposure areas.
- Assist with exemption certificate management and compliance documentation.
DirectandIndirectTax Support(20%)
- Assist with international, federal, and state income tax compliance, including data gathering and initiating payments.
- Support non-income-based tax filings.
Tax Notices,Nexus and Registrations(10%)
- Assist in responding to tax notices and information requests.
- Assist with nexus analysis, state registrations, and related compliance requirements.
Tax Research andProcess Improvement(10%)
- Monitor and research federal, state, and local tax law changes, with a focus on SALT developments.
- Maintain tax work papers and supporting documentation, ensuring records are complete, organized, and audit ready.
- Assist in improving tax processes, controls, and documentation.
Position Requirements
- Foundational knowledge of state and local tax (SALT) principles, including sales and use tax.
- Comfortable conducting tax research using online resources and tax research platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ability to work with large datasets.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a remote environment.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal teams and external advisors.
- Experience with tax compliance tools such as Avalara or Vertex required; advanced proficiency preferred.
- Experience with Vantagepoint is a plus.
Education / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field from an accredited institution
- CPA license highly preferred
- 3-5 years of relevant tax experience, with exposure to sales and use tax
- Experience in the service industry preferred
- Prior public accounting experience is preferred
