Site Medical Director

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Site Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight to support the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care at an assigned clinical site or sites.

The Site Medical Director is responsible for providing leadership to medical providers and overseeing key areas of clinical operations, including:

• Clinical quality and patient care
• Quality assurance and continuous improvement
• Patient and staff safety
• Provider productivity and performance
• Clinical service delivery
• Provider engagement and staff development
• Collaboration with clinical and operational leadership

The Site Medical Director serves as a visible clinical leader and role model, fostering a collaborative, supportive, and accountable environment while demonstrating Marin Community Clinics' core values of integrity, excellence, equity, and resilience.

Responsibilities

As Site Medical Director, you will combine clinical practice with meaningful leadership. You will guide and develop a multidisciplinary provider team, partner with operational leadership, and help ensure exceptional, patient-centered care across your clinical site.

Clinical Leadership & Administration

• Lead, mentor, and support physicians, advanced practice providers, and other licensed medical providers, fostering professional growth, engagement, and long-term success.
• Promote a culture of clinical excellence, collaboration, accountability, and compassionate patient care.
• Partner with the Site Clinic Manager to establish strategic priorities, staffing models, and operational goals that improve patient access, efficiency, and quality of care.
• Oversee provider adherence to clinical standards, organizational policies, workflows, credentialing requirements, and scopes of practice.
• Lead provider performance reviews and support ongoing professional development.
• Champion site-level quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, and clinical performance initiatives.
• Review and respond to clinical incidents, patient complaints, quality concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
• Partner with clinical and operational leaders to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, documentation, billing, and training requirements.
• Serve as a key clinical leader for the site, representing the clinical team at leadership meetings, committees, and appropriate community partnership meetings.
• Collaborate with nursing and clinic operations leadership to create efficient workflows that support an excellent patient and provider experience.
• Help guide site priorities related to staffing, equipment, budgets, and clinical services based on the needs of the patient population.
• Lead regular provider and clinical staff meetings focused on education, quality improvement, safety, compliance, and organizational initiatives.

Clinical Practice

The Site Medical Director will maintain an active clinical practice while providing leadership to the care team.

• Provide high-quality, evidence-based outpatient primary care within the physician's specialty, such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics.
• Deliver preventive, acute, urgent, and chronic disease care to an assigned patient panel.
• Provide clinical consultation and support to advanced practice providers consistent with specialty, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
• Participate in quality management, peer review, and clinical improvement activities.
• Contribute to the ongoing development of healthcare services as an active member of the primary care team.
• Participate in a minimum of three 4-hour Saturday shifts per calendar year, in addition to regularly scheduled shifts.
• Perform other clinical responsibilities as assigned by the supervising Medical Director.

Additional Specialty Responsibilities

Pediatrics

• Opportunity to participate in pediatric inpatient hospital rounds based on organizational need and physician interest.

Internal Medicine & Family Medicine

• Participate in organizational after-hours coverage for critical adult patient laboratory results for a minimum of two weeks per year.

People Leadership

As a Site Medical Director, you will play an important role in building, developing, and retaining an exceptional provider team.

• Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and onboarding physicians, advanced practice providers, and key clinical staff.
• Support successful onboarding, training, mentorship, and continued professional development.
• Establish clear performance expectations and provide timely coaching, feedback, and formal evaluations.
• Oversee applicable time and attendance responsibilities, including timesheets and time-off approvals.
• Help maintain a safe, respectful, compliant, and collaborative work environment.

Qualifications

We are looking for a physician leader who combines clinical excellence with a collaborative leadership style and a genuine commitment to caring for diverse communities.

Required Qualifications

• M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school.
• Current, unrestricted California medical license and DEA registration.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics.
• Minimum of three years of primary care experience, preferably in a family or community health setting.
• At least one year of healthcare leadership or supervisory experience.
• Current BLS certification.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, coach, and develop clinical teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across clinical and operational teams.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed care.
• Ability to effectively navigate electronic health records and related healthcare technology.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) or community health environment.
• Experience with quality improvement, managed care, and healthcare regulatory compliance.
• Familiarity with requirements associated with HRSA, FTCA, CMS, CDPH, DHCS, and The Joint Commission.
• Experience using Epic or a similar electronic health record system.
• Bilingual Spanish/English skills are strongly preferred.

Work Environment & Flexibility

• Some travel between Marin Community Clinics locations, administrative offices, and community partner sites within Marin County is required.
• Remote work requires appropriate internet and telephone connectivity and a private workspace that protects patient confidentiality.
• Must meet applicable immunization and fitness-for-duty requirements.
• The position includes a combination of direct patient care, leadership meetings, computer-based administrative work, walking, sitting, and standing.
