Reporting to the Department Head of Clinical Sciences, the successful candidate will join a collaborative and supportive team committed to delivering a forward-thinking small animal teaching program within the preclinical veterinary curriculum. This position supports the delivery of an innovative small animal surgery and shelter medicine curriculum. Contribution to teaching across the curriculum, including didactic instruction, surgical laboratories, clinical skills training, and experiential learning activities will also be expected. Responsibilities include teaching small animal surgery, shelter medicine, animal welfare, and related clinical disciplines. The role includes providing occasional surgical consultations within the on-campus community practice clinic and mentoring faculty within that practice setting.

Candidates are expected to develop an active research program that contributes to the advancement of veterinary medicine, surgical practice, shelter medicine, animal welfare, clinical education, or related fields. The School supports research in infectious diseases

and animal health in tropical environments through strategic initiatives and internal funding opportunities; however, applicants are expected to pursue external research funding as well.

Service to the institution, profession, and community is an important component of the appointment and includes participation on committees, student mentoring, professional organizations, and outreach initiatives.

Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Department Head as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching:

· Contribute to the delivery of team-taught courses in small animal surgery and shelter medicine.

· Provide didactic instruction in areas such as surgery, animal welfare, population control, clinical reasoning, and related disciplines aligned with the candidate’s expertise.

· Mentor students during small animal surgery laboratories, community outreach activities including shelter medicine experiences.

· Provide clinical consultation and mentorship to faculty in the Ross University Veterinary Clinic.

· Participate in curriculum development and continuous improvement initiatives.

Research and Scholarly Activity:

· Establish an independent and/or collaborative research program

· Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals

· Present research at national and international scientific conferences

Service:

· Serve on university and departmental committees

· Participate in the supervision and mentoring of Master’s and PhD students

· Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by departmental leadership

Qualifications

• A DVM or equivalent degree and an advanced degree (MSc or equivalent).
• Board certification in Shelter Medicine Practice (American or European) or a PhD in addition to a DVM are highly preferred.
• Prior teaching experience at an AVMA-accredited institution or equivalent is preferred.
• Experience with innovative and evidence-based teaching methodologies, including active learning, simulation, and competency-based veterinary education.
