Software Development Engineer

What we are looking for:

As a Software Development Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing and enhancing our suite of clean energy software solutions, including Athena®,PowerTrack®, and Locus. You willbe responsible forbuilding scalable, high-performance web applications that handle massive volumes of energy data and provide intuitive user experiences for energy asset management and optimization.

You will work across the entire technology stack, from designing responsive user interfaces to implementing robust backend services and APIs. This role requires a versatile engineer who can seamlessly transition between frontend and backend development whilemaintaininga strong focus on code quality, performance, and user experience.You'llcollaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver features that directlyimpactthe clean energy industry's growth and efficiency.

Responsibilities:

• Full Stack Development - Design, develop, andmaintainend-to-end features across our web applications, from user interface components to backend services and database integrations.

• Frontend Excellence - Build responsive, accessible, and performant user interfaces using modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Vue.js) and ensureoptimaluser experiences across desktop and mobile platforms.

• Backend Architecture - Develop robust REST APIs, microservices, and serverless functions using languages such as Python, Node.js, Java, or C#, ensuring scalability and maintainability.

• Database Design & Optimization - Design andoptimizedatabase schemas, queries, and data access patterns for both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB) databases to handle large-scale energy data.

• API Development & Integration - Create andmaintainRESTful andGraphQLAPIs, integrate with third-party services, and ensure proper documentation and versioning strategies.

• Cloud-Native Development - Build and deploy applications on AWS cloud infrastructure,leveragingservices like Lambda, ECS, RDS, and S3 for scalable and resilient solutions.

• Performance Optimization -Identifyand resolve performance bottlenecks in both frontend and backend systems, implementing caching strategies, query optimization, and code refactoring as needed.

• Testing & Quality Assurance - Write comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using modern testing frameworks to ensure code reliability and maintainability.

• Code Reviews & Mentorship -Participatein code reviews, provide constructive feedback to team members, and mentor junior developers in best practices and technical skills.

• Agile Collaboration - Work closely with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment,participatingin sprint planning, daily standups, and retrospectives to deliver high-quality software on schedule.

• Technical Innovation - Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, proposing and implementing new tools and approaches that improve development efficiency and product capabilities.

• Documentation - Create andmaintaintechnical documentation for code, APIs, and system architectures tofacilitateteam collaboration and knowledge sharing.

• DevOps Integration - Collaborate with DevOps teams to implement CI/CD pipelines, containerization strategies, and monitoring solutions for deployed applications.

• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Education - B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred, or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience - 5+ years of professional full stack development experience with a proventrack recordof delivering complex web applications from conception to production.

• Frontend Expertise - Strongproficiencyin modern JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS3, and at least one major frontend framework (React preferred, Angular, or Vue.js). Experience with TypeScript is highly valued.

• Backend Proficiency - Solid experience with server-side development using Python, Node.js, Java, or C#, including frameworks like Django, Flask, Express.js, Spring Boot, or .NET Core.

• Database Skills - Hands-on experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, including query optimization, schema design, and data modeling. Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or similar databases.

• API Development - Extensive experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs, with knowledge ofGraphQLbeing a plus.Understanding ofAPI security, authentication, and authorization patterns.

• Cloud Platform Experience - Practical experience with AWS services including EC2, Lambda, RDS, S3, and API Gateway. Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes) is preferred.

• Version Control & Collaboration -Proficiencywith Git workflows, code review processes, and collaborative development practices in distributed teams.

• Testing Practices - Experience with automated testing frameworks and methodologies, including unit testing, integration testing, and test-driven development (TDD).

• Performance & Scalability -Understanding ofapplication performance optimization, caching strategies, and designing systems that can handle high traffic and large datasets.

• DevOps Awareness - Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and monitoring tools. Experience with GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar platforms.

• Mobile Development - Experience with responsive design principles and/or mobile application development (React Native, Flutter, or native iOS/Android) is a plus.

• Data Visualization - Experience with charting libraries and data visualization frameworks (D3.js, Chart.js,Plotly) for creating interactive dashboards and analytics interfaces.

• Problem-Solving Skills - Strong analytical and debugging skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across the full stack.

• Communication Skills - Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Agile Methodology - Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with understanding of sprint planning, estimation, and iterative development practices.

• Industry Interest - Genuine interest in clean energy, sustainability, and making a positive environmental impact through technology solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with time-series databases and IoT data processing

• Knowledge of energy industry standards and protocols

• Familiarity with data analytics and machine learning concepts

• Experience with real-time data streaming and processing

• Background in building applications for regulated industries

• Contributions to open-source projects or active technical community involvement
