Sr. Tech Lead

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Tech Lead with deep healthcare technology expertise to lead the engineering team responsible for our core product. This role combines advanced technical architecture ownership, healthcare interoperability leadership, cloud infrastructure strategy, and people management.

The ideal candidate brings practitioner-level experience in healthcare systems, including production HIE integrations, regulatory compliance, and standards-based interoperability. This individual will serve as the technical authority, ensuring systems are scalable, secure, compliant, and operationally reliable while leading and mentoring a high-performing engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Architecture & Infrastructure

• Own and evolve the engineering architecture for the core product, including microservices design, API contracts, data models, service boundaries, and integration patterns.
• Lead cloud architecture decisions across AWS, Azure, and GCP environments.
• Design containerized systems using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Architect on-premise and hybrid deployment models for enterprise clients with strict data residency and security requirements.
• Drive scalability strategies including horizontal/vertical scaling, caching (Redis/CDN), asynchronous processing, database optimization, and read-replica configurations.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and implement Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform, Helm, and Ansible.
• Implement DevSecOps practices across the engineering lifecycle.
• Establish production-grade observability through distributed tracing, structured logging, monitoring dashboards, and alerting systems.

2. Healthcare Systems & Interoperability

• Lead Health Information Exchange (HIE) integrations with networks such as CommonWell Health Alliance and Carequality.
• Implement and manage integrations using HL7 v2/v3 messaging, FHIR R4/R5 APIs, CDA documents, and X12 EDI transactions.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA Security and Privacy Rules, HITECH requirements, 21st Century Cures Act mandates, and applicable ONC/CMS certification standards.
• Guide development of SMART on FHIR applications and CDS Hooks integrations.
• Translate clinical workflows (ADT events, referrals, care transitions, medication reconciliation) into reliable and auditable technical solutions.
• Evaluate and manage healthcare integration engines and middleware such as Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, Azure Health Data Services, and AWS HealthLake.

3. Engineering Execution & Delivery

• Lead sprint planning, backlog refinement, release planning, and code review processes.
• Convert product and clinical requirements into structured engineering milestones and deliverables.
• Maintain high standards for code quality, documentation, and test coverage.
• Own production incident response and lead post-incident root cause analysis.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering velocity, deployment frequency, and system reliability.

4. Team Leadership & People Management

• Directly manage engineers, including performance management, career development, and goal setting.
• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
• Identify skills gaps and provide mentorship, training, and development plans.
• Partner with recruiting to define hiring requirements and maintain a high hiring bar.
• Proactively manage workload distribution and team sustainability.

5. Technical Strategy & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with product and clinical stakeholders to align engineering roadmap with business priorities.
• Clearly communicate technical risks, trade-offs, and architecture decisions to non-technical audiences.
• Contribute to product discovery and strategic technology planning.
• Provide recommendations on build vs. buy decisions and vendor evaluations.
• Track and report on engineering performance metrics including deployment frequency, lead time, incident rates, and system uptime.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years in engineering leadership.
• Demonstrated experience delivering healthcare technology solutions in production environments.
• Proven hands-on experience with HIE integrations and interoperability standards.
• Strong cloud architecture experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Experience implementing DevOps/DevSecOps and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
• Strong understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance requirements.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting ONC-certified products.
• Experience with enterprise healthcare clients and hybrid/on-prem deployments.
• Background in scaling distributed systems within regulated industries.
