ABOUT THE COMPANY:

An established industrial engineering and manufacturing company from New Zealand with decades of market presence. The company specializes in versatile design, custom fabrication, and specialized production solutions for diverse sector applications.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Structural Steel Detailer produces the shop drawings that everything else for the client depends on. Nothing is cut, fabricated, or erected until the detailing is done and approved, so the role sits directly on the critical path of every project. The client fabricates and erects structural steel for commercial and industrial projects up to 100 tonnes, from seismic strengthening in trading supermarkets to store refurbishments and new builds. Around 1,500 tonnes a year across 15 to 25 live jobs at any time, plus hook bin work under Beachcroft out of the same Otahuhu workshop. This is the second detailing position. The Detailer owns allocated jobs end to end: site measure, 3D model, shop drawings, the approval cycle with the head contractor and engineer, and support to the workshop and site crews through fabrication and erection.

Requirements

• Undertake site measures, including on live and occupied sites. This includes trading supermarkets, working at height, and occasional after-hours or night-shift work.
• Produce 3D models and the full shop drawing set: general arrangements, assembly drawings, single part drawings for members and plates, DXF files for profile cutting, IFC models for issue to the head contractor, and cutting lists for the workshop.
• Interpret architectural, structural, and services drawings and identify clashes before fabrication. Existing services and as-built conditions frequently differ from the drawings.
• Raise Requests for Information, maintain the RFI register, and actively chase outstanding answers rather than waiting on them.
• Check transport envelopes and flag over-dimension assemblies at the drawing stage.
• Manage drawing registers, revisions and issue logs, and apply the client title block standards to every set.
• Issue and track drawings through Procore and the head contractor's systems, and correspond directly with engineers where a job requires it.
• Coordinate with the Fabrication Manager, Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor and Site Team Leaders to confirm constructability, sequence and fit.
• Support site crews in resolving fit-up issues and design clashes as they arise.
• Comply with the client's health and safety requirements at all times, including when on site.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At a minimum, the Structural Steel Detailer must have:

• Proven structural steel detailing experience on projects that have been built.
• Working proficiency in a 3D structural detailing package. The client runs Tekla Structures. A strong detailer from another package will be considered, with time allowed to convert.
• A sound understanding of steel fabrication and erection, including fit-up, weld access, bolt access, lifting points and erection sequence.
• The ability to deal directly and confidently with engineers and head contractor project staff.
• Strong attention to detail, and the judgement to raise a query rather than assume. • The ability to work to fixed approval and fabrication dates across several concurrent jobs.

Desirable:

• Tekla Structures software experience (Must have)

• Australian and New Zealand Experience preferred.

• Experience of New Zealand codes and standards.

• Seismic strengthening and remediation experience, where the existing structure is irregular and as-built records are unreliable.
