Construction Management Intern

Job Summary

Bauer Design Build is offering a Construction Management Internship where you’ll do more than shadow, you’ll actually learn how buildings come to life.

This is a hands-on opportunity to connect what you’re learning in the classroom with what happens on real commercial construction projects. Our internship program is designed to give you exposure to the different sides of construction management while allowing you to build experience throughout your college career.

A Three-Year Construction Management Development Path

At Bauer, we believe the best way to learn construction management is to experience it from multiple perspectives. Our internship program is structured around three areas of the business:

Your starting point is based on your experience. We consider your year in school, previous internships, construction experience, skills, and demonstrated knowledge when determining the appropriate placement within the program. Previous experience may allow you to enter the program beyond Year 1.

Year 1 | Field Operations: Your first year is about learning construction from the ground up.

You’ll have opportunities to:

• Gain hands-on experience on active commercial construction projects
• Learn how a jobsite operates from mobilization through completion
• Work alongside Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, trade partners, and skilled labor
• Observe and support daily safety and quality processes
• Learn how plans and specifications translate into physical construction
• Assist with jobsite documentation and coordination
• Gain exposure to scheduling, materials, equipment, and subcontractor coordination
• Develop an understanding of how different trades work together
• Support carpenters, equipment operators, and skilled labor when needed

Year 2 | Preconstruction: With a foundation in field operations, you'll begin learning how projects are planned and priced before construction begins.

You’ll have opportunities to:

• Learn estimating and preconstruction processes
• Read and interpret construction plans and specifications
• Complete quantity takeoffs
• Assist with bid solicitation and analysis
• Learn how subcontractors and vendors are selected and coordinated
• Assist with estimating and project budgeting
• Gain exposure to project schedules and construction planning
• Participate in preconstruction meetings
• Learn how decisions made before construction impact the jobsite and final project

Year 3 | Project Management: By your third year, you'll begin connecting your field and preconstruction experience to the broader responsibilities of project management.

You’ll have opportunities to:

• Support Project Managers and Project Engineers on active projects
• Assist with project coordination and documentation
• Participate in project meetings
• Support subcontractor and vendor coordination
• Gain experience with project schedules and job cost review
• Assist with procurement and material tracking
• Learn how project changes, costs, schedules, and contracts are managed
• Participate in communication with project stakeholders
• Take on defined project responsibilities with increasing independence
• Apply what you've learned in the field and preconstruction to real project management decisions

What We’re Looking For

• Currently enrolled in a Construction Management or related program
• Previous construction, internship, or related industry experience is a plus
• Valid driver’s license
• Interest in commercial construction and construction management
• Comfortable working in both office and jobsite environments
• Comfortable with physical labor and working in varying weather conditions
• General safety knowledge; PPE will be provided
• Microsoft Project and/or Procore experience is a plus
• Self-starter with strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
• Willingness to learn, ask questions, take feedback, and get involved

You don't have to know everything when you walk through our doors. We’re looking for students who are curious, willing to work, and ready to learn.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

Construction is a mix of office and jobsite life. Depending on your internship placement, you may:

• Spend time both indoors and outdoors
• Sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and work closely with others
• Use hands and arms for detailed tasks
• Occasionally climb, kneel, crouch, or lift up to 50 lbs.
• Work in varying weather conditions while on active jobsites

Schedule & Pay

• Full-time, Monday–Friday
• Hours may vary depending on role, project, and jobsite needs
• $20–$22/hour
