Surgery Technician

HES takes in approximately 3,300 animals a year from the Hamilton County area and boasts an over 90% live release rate as an open-admissions shelter. The organization provides care for homeless animals, adoptions, animal services, volunteer opportunities, foster home support, pet food assistance, trap/neuter release for community cats, and humane education.

High quality veterinary care is essential to the well-being of animals at HES and also provides meaningful purpose driven work for those that are passionate about High Volume High Quality Spay & Neuter. Our team of medical professionals hits the ground running each morning and complete 15-25 surgeries before 2pm on a daily basis. We are committed to providing an inclusive and positive work culture through mutual respect and open communication between team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist the veterinarian performing surgery with 20-25 spay/neuter surgeries each working day
• Communicate effectively and professionally with other staff, volunteers, and the public
• Follow guidelines for High-Quality High-Volume Spay/Neuter (HQHVSN) as designed by the ASPCA (www.aspcapro.org)
• Schedule shelter animals for spay/neuter surgeries according to shelter priorities
• Maintain efficient clinic flow of animals to and from surgery, including moving patients, recovery, and general clinic flow
• Ensure adherence to laws and policies regarding controlled substance regulations under supervision of veterinarian, including but not limited to usage logs, storage, handling
• Plan anesthetic care and monitor patients
• Prepare patients for surgery and enforce sterility and safety of patients
• Respond appropriately during an emergency and take directions from veterinarian and/or veterinary technician and maintain competency in CPR procedures
• Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental procedures
• Create, update, and maintain records, physical and electronic, so that information is up-to-date
• Ensure all paperwork is completed promptly and accurately
• Stock and inventory supplies as needed
• Maintain an organized and sanitary clinic area
• Clean patient kennels as needed
• Follow safety procedures as directed by shelter leadership
• Manager other duties, as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 2 years experience as a surgery technician
• High school diploma, Associates or higher, and/or relevant certifications preferred
• Commitment to animal welfare mission of HES
• Verification of licensure for LVMTs
• Must agree to provide references and background check

• Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to veterinary technicians and assistants
• Knowledge of basic veterinary concepts
• Able to handle domestic animals with appropriate care and caution
• Able to learn and apply new concepts to work as instructed
• Able to use computer and shelter software
• Able to lift 50-60lbs repeatedly throughout day, and properly restrain large and/or fractious animals
• The employee will be expected to move animals throughout the shelter, including main kennel areas and animal quarantine areas
• Physical demands include but are not limited to heavy lifting, bending, walking, reaching, sitting, standing, grasping and kneeling, handling syringes, needles, and animal medications
