Position Summary
Coordinates and schedules surgical procedures while providing pre-admission testing and nursing assessment services to ensure patients are prepared for surgery. Serves as a liaison between patients, providers, physician offices, ancillary departments, and insurance companies. Responsible for scheduling surgical cases, reviewing patient clinical information, providing pre-operative education, and ensuring all required documentation and testing are completed prior to surgery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Schedule surgical procedures and accurately enter case information into the scheduling system.
- Coordinate surgery schedules with physicians, anesthesia providers, operating room staff, and ancillary departments.
- Answer department telephone calls and respond to inquiries from patients, families, physician offices, and staff.
- Perform administrative duties necessary to maintain the efficient operation of the department.
- Verify patient demographic and insurance information and communicate referral and authorization requirements.
- Conduct pre-admission testing assessments, including review of patient medical history, medications, allergies, and surgical readiness.
- Review laboratory results, diagnostic testing, and required medical clearances prior to surgery.
- Identify and communicate potential patient care concerns to appropriate providers.
- Coordinate additional testing, consultations, and clearances as needed.
- Provide patient education regarding pre-operative instructions, medication management, fasting requirements, arrival times, and post-operative expectations.
- Ensure all required documentation, physician orders, consents, and test results are available and complete prior to surgery.
- Document assessments, patient interactions, and education in the electronic health record.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
- May perform duties such as circulator RN, Scrub RN, Sterile Processing, Preop, and PACU RN when staffing needs arise.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Licensure/Certification
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Missouri required.
- Current BLS certification required.
Experience
- Previous experience in surgery scheduling, perioperative services, pre-admission testing, ambulatory care, or acute care preferred.
- Experience with electronic health records and scheduling software preferred.

Physical Requirements
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and use of hands for computer and office equipment operation.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Visual acuity sufficient to read printed materials and computer screens.
